Haircuts are scary.

I'm getting my hair professionally cut this thursday for the first time in about ten years. (I've been trimming it myself in between)

And frankly, I'm nervous.

I have an appointment with a guy I know to be good with hair in general, but I have no idea how he cuts curly hair. (I don't think I have a lot of options on this one, I live in the middle of nowhere, midwest USA) It's the best salon in town, and I'm spending a small fortune on this cut... Any recommendations on how to handle it when I go in?

Do you have pics that you can bring to show him what you are looking for?

Also, have you had a consultation with him - told him what you are seeking while he examines your hair and explains if/how he will be able to do it?

Pictures are a very good idea... I just need to grab a new printer cartridge before Thursday.

I haven't had a chance for a consult, though I see him on a regular basis, I should definitely talk about it before I go in. (he's a customer in my store :) )

Thanks for the suggestions.

One thing that's important is to agree on exactly how much he will cut off. If you say you want an inch off, ask him to measure out an inch for you. And you both need to remember that your hair will shrink up when dry and curly, so an inch cut off the hair could make it 2 or 3 inches shorter, depending on how curly you are.

If parts of your hair curl more or less than other parts, point that out to him, so he can compensate and make them come out even. (For instance, if your underneath layer is less curly, it should be cut a bit shorter or it will hang out.)

If you can bring pictures of what you want, that's really helpful.
