Short haircut...thick hair. Help.

I'm going off to college in the fall, and I want to kind of shed off the weight from my hair. I cut it short once two and a half years ago, and according to my mom, I hated it. I don't remember hating it, all I remember is not knowing how to put it back in clips or ponytails of whatever. This is what it looked like:

So if I go to get it cut short (a specialized salon is not an option, I'm going to college in a small town in Southeast Ohio), what should I tell the stylist? I think my old short look was really cute and bouncy and made me look older, and would be appropriate for my height (5'3")...Tips?

Here's my hair now, as a reference point. It tends to get big and look unkempt without being back. The below pic was taken on a good day:

Arrrrghhh... I wish I could remember who did my hair when I went to OU. I assume if you're going to school in SE Ohio you're somewhere sort of near the area, if not actually going there. She did a great job on my curls! I can't even remember then name of the salon... I think it was on Court Street. Too much college partying has warped my brain!

Or are you near Marietta? My stepmom's a curly and has gone to the same woman there forever... I can ask for her name.

i think thick, curly hair looks nice in an inverted bob. i used to wear my hair like that a lot. i wouldn't really go above the jawline, and that way you can still pull it back, etc.
