Does this routine look good?

Since so many of you are much more knowledgeable about curl care than I am, I was wondering if anyone could critique my routine for me? I've just decided to try the CG route in the last couple of days. I haven't read the book, but I've heard most of the basic ideas, I think. Here's what I'm currently doing/planning on doing:

I'm CO-washing with the same frequency that I shampooed before (about every other day, sometimes wetting it down on the 2nd day but not washing it). I'm using Suave Citrus Smoothie conditioner for this. I don't have a decent gel yet (tried aloe vera gel and did not like the results), but I'm going to pick up some tomorrow, I'm thinking maybe HE Set Me Up? I've heard some good things about this one on the forums.

I don't use any other conditioner other than the one for CO-washing. Do I need to get something additional to use, or is that enough? And what about styling products? Am I missing something I should have?

Sorry to ramble on! I'd really appreciate any input.

You need a more moisturizing conditioner if the Suave isn't enough. And just moisturize as many days of the week as you would like.

As for gels, I wouldn't exactly recommend SMU, but I would recommend either L.A. Looks Sports Gel or L.A. Looks Curls. (one is light blue, the other dark blue). You get about 20-28 oz. for $2.29 and sometimes they're on sale! That's about the cheapest you can get, and you'll wanna experiment alot, just don't let your inner PJ out.

A routine that works well for one curly, can be disasterous for the next.

HTH!

EDIT: If your hair needs deep treatment and you don't feel like running out to the store, you can make one yourself from fairly simple ingredients. I have some recipes on my website, below in my signature. Click on "DT Recipes".

If you feel you get enough moisture from the Suave, I say go for it and don't worry about getting another conditioner. Most folks use the Suave just for conditioner washing and get a more moisturizing conditioner for conditioning. However, there are some that use just Suave and have good results.

The HE Set Me Up has gotten good reviews. I haven't tried it, but have tried the HE Body Envy. I liked the body envy.

My daughter has wavy hair, and I'll give you a few things she seems to like. I think she likes V05 better than the Suave. I think she's been getting the v05 moisture millks. As for gels, she likes this stuff (I like it, too) called Curl Fx Curl Booster Fixative gel. You can get it at most drug stores. My Wal-mart used to carry it, but stopped. You need to be careful with that line of products, though. Several of the products have similar names and packaging, and some of the products in the line are not cone-free. If you want to purchase salon-type stuff, she like the Deva Angell.

Thank you both for your replies!

As to needing or not needing more moisture than just my CO-wash conditioner, how do I tell? I'm sure that seems like a dumb question, but my hair is pretty coarse, so if I judge its need for more moisture by its softness, I'll never know when to stop.

Ttripleblonde, that recipe page is great! I've always liked cooking up homemade face masks, so those sound like fun. Can I ask why you don't like the SMU gel? (I've only ever used one gel consistently, and that one has long since been discontinued.)

Brio, I'll have to look for the Moisture Milks. I remember having one a long time ago and loving the smell, but never used it for CO-washing.

Thanks to both of you!

Lots of times, I think what is considered moisturzing is something that is thicker and richer and leaves more of a moisture barrier (or a residue) on your hair. I may be totally off base on this. Like I said, "moisture" confuses me, too.

Also, you need to make sure that you get enough detangling properties from your conditioner. I think some find that Suave is not rich and slippery enough to do that sufficiently.

One C is usually considered a moisturizing conditioner and it has oils and such in it (olive oil, I believe). While it made may daughter's wavy hair super soft, she said it also made it droopy.

IMO, I think it's too stiff of a gel.
My hair didn't turn out well using it.
I had defined curls and all but they were EXTREMELY crunchy. And I get crunchy once in a blue moon.

I agree with JuicyTube about the sulfate clarifying before you begin CG.

Good luck!

If you're coarse, you might want a more moisturizing one after your co wash. I'm coarse too and love the rich stuff.

But, if your hair just feels coarse and not dry and brittle, you may be fine.

As a thicker coarser curly, I like the SMU because it has a hard hold to keep the frizzies under some control while keeping curl formation. i don't mind some crunch, adn this crunches out OK for me. Everyone is different though. The good thing though is that it is cheap so you only wasted 3 bucks if you try it and don't like it.
Kiva! Microfinance works.

Med/Coarse, porous curly.
I clarified my hair last night, so I've got a nice fresh start now. As for an extra conditioner, I'm looking at a few different ones, mainly the One C and also Aussie's 3MM (since I've heard good things about that one here). Anyone care to comment on either of these? I don't think I'd need a *lot* of additional moisture; maybe just a little boost to my co-wash conditioner.

TTripleblonde, thanks for the info! I get the feeling I'll be trying out a lot of different gels in the near future, and I've got the two you recommended on my list to check out at the store.

Thank you all for your advice! This is so helpful.

The L.A. Looks Curls gel is FANTASTIC! I'm having great hair every day with it. And I love the Loreal Vive Pro Condish for medium/long hair thats wavy/curly. Great cheap stuff.
