I can't answer the second question, but proteins are good if your hair is damaged and needs TLC but bad if your hair is strong and healthy because it can build up and give a rough feeling.

Here's my understanding, based on reading all over the place, and I could be completely dead wrong, BUT...here is what I gather:

1. Protein is good for your hair and is a necessity for damaged hair BUT

2. ...Never as a leave-in, it should always be rinsed out so no leave-ins or styling products with protein (the reason being that it will leave your hair feeling "hard").

3. A deep protein treatment (like Aphogee) must be followed by a deep moisturizing conditioner that has no proteins in it.

4. Conditioners that have moisture and proteins mixed are good for weekly maintenance in between deep protein treatments.

That's what I've been able to garner...

And no, silicones are not "bad." Some are very good.
