if i use just plain old aloe vera gel with recoil would that be moisturizing enough? the great thing about using a leave in with it is that it makes my curls feel like silk....but now i cant find one without cones and proteins!! do any even exist? thanks

Have you tried any of the Suave Naturals or VO5 Moisture Milks conditioners? They are all silicone-free with some individual ones being protein-free also- you'd have to check the labels, but I'm pretty sure the Suave Aloe, Citrus Smoothie, and Mountain Strawberry are protein-free, as well as the VO5 Key Lime. Though most people use them as co-washes, some people find them moisturizing enough to use as conditioners, too, sometimes adding oils or honey to boost them.

If you have any Trader Joe's near you, the Nourish conditioner is also inexpensive and well-loved by curlies on this site. I haven't used it, but it seems most people find it moisturizing enough to use as a regular conditioner.

For a cone-free, protein-free leave in, I'd recommend my favorite-Paul Mitchell The Conditioner. It's a mid-priced product (try to catch it on sale, someone is always saying they got it on sale somewhere and that's how I stocked up on mine, too).

Aloe is used as a moisturizing ingredient in many, many hair products. If you use it for a while and your hair feels hydrated and soft, then maybe that's enough to meet your hair's needs.
In the Curly Girl book, Lorraine Massey recommends using regular conditioners as leave ins. If you can find a conditioner without cones or protein, that could be used as a leave in, if you like to use one. I personally find that a leave in usually becomes too heavy, but that's prolly due to my hair type and fineness. I think we're different hair types, so products may work differently for our hair.

There are curlies who use aloe vera gel alone, so it may work for you. Herbal Essences Set Me Up gel is one that I use, and it doesn't have silicones or proteins. It is a strong hold gel, so if you don't like any stiffness it may be too strong for you. It's pretty cheap though and available at the drugstore. The other one I've heard good things about is the HE Body Envy gel, although I haven't tried it yet myself.
