sulfates make me happy???

Hi All!

I have shoulder-length, 3a hair and it would seem that it prefers sulfates and cones to Jessicurl et al...?

I was CO for about a year (when my hair was longer) and, although I had the technique down, I was pretty 'meh' about it. Anyways, went for the chop about 3 weeks ago, and since then have been back on the sulfates and cones. It looked so good after the hairdresser used the high end prods on it that I couldn't resist!

Three weeks on, and my hair not only looks great, but feels nice too. Conscious that I might be over-stressing the hair, I've spent the last 7 days COing and using Jessicurl...(having done a clarify first) and now it looks crappy. This morning I used Dove and woooooah, the curls are back.

So, I guess I'm interested, has anyone else experienced this? I *do* put a moisturiser on my hair every night, and I don't use heat..so I'm not trashing it too badly...but I must say I'm surprised!

ps. Anyone who doesn't mind the cones MUST try Nicky Clarke Endless Waves Intense Condition treatment. It is the BOMB!
I'm very new to going CG, but right now I can't promise that I'll never use a sulfate again

I've also got my 2 year old daughter on modified CG, using low poo and mild cones only (she's got 3b curls). I noticed yesterday how crappy her hair looked and felt - her hair felt extremely fine, limp, and the curls were just... not holding together right. I decided last night for the first time in 2 weeks to use sulfate poo on her again (johnsons baby) and voila, her curls were back to form. I don't know if that was just a fluke or what, but I'll probably do a mod CG routine on her and then wash with a sulfate poo every 2 weeks.

Who knows LOL. I know everyone's hair is different.

The same thing happened to me. When I first went to my natural hair, I did all "right" things (no cones, sulfates, mineral oil, some one even told me no propyl glycol) and my hair suffered for two months and caused me to relax my hair again.

Now, I use a ALS shampoo (supposedly the worst sulfate) and Pantene (which we all know is chocked full of cones), and my hair has never looked better.
Coily and cute.

Is it possible that just Jessicurl isn't working out for you, not the whole CG route itself?

With that being said, I'm also not fully CG. I use a shampoo (non-sulfate though) and use a SLS poo when I feel necessary. Some of the CO and styling products I use have lights cones in them as well. I've tried full CG and it just didn't work out well for me as I do like having the option to straighten my hair!
In DESPERATE need of a haircut.
I've using the gentler sulfates lately and my hair has been great. My hair just isn't dry, so sulfates are fine.

Fearnotsomuch, I do exactly what you do. And I also like to straighten sometimes too. But I love the non sulfate poo's. And I clarify about every month or so. My hair is so different now. It is less curly than I thought and has waves instead. My hair has no frizz anymore. I would freak out if I got caught in the rain or God forbid it was humid. My hair would turn into a frizz ball with messed up curls if that is what you could even call it. Now I can let my hair dry natural and it is great. I wish I had known this years ago.
I use B&A method and products. The poo has a sulfate in it, I think. CG just didn't work for me. I tried for months. It gave me a weird bald spot on the back of my head. I wasn't actually bald, but my part just kept going down the back of my head-shudder- it was frightful looking! About Jessiecurl-I'm allergic! I've tried all the products, they make me itch everywhere they touch. Scalp, shoulders, back, where the water runs off in the shower, all itches every time I use a JC product.
I'm actually thinking about going back to regular sulfates. CO washing didn't work for me either. I don't think my hair is dry to begin with so it was kind of an overload. I have been using Elucence's MBS for a few years now but I'm starting to wonder if it's becoming to much moisture for me now. Especially since I discovered Oyin Honey-hemp co as my rinse out.

I think most people's hair looks better w/ sulfates and cones, especially for the first few months. But if a person has very curly hair (tighter curls make it dryer), especially if it is cottony textured, and she wears it long (long hair means old hair) the sulfates will cause dryness over time. And if she colors, blow dries, relaxes, texturizes, doesn't deep condition, etc. the dryness can become extreme.

People with straighter hair probably don't benefit as much from a CG routine.

And sometimes a CG routine won't work for the very curly-haired either because they're using the wrong products, the wrong techniques or some other reason, like hard water, low hair porosity.

I do LOVE the Lavender Mist I made using the recipe from the CG book, tho!! It's awesome! My hair thinks it's the greatest! Using it, I can get second day hair, which I've never been able to accomplish before! The B&A and the LMist work very well together!!
