Ugh, I bet that smelled awful. Speaking of things that take forever to get out of hair, sand is pretty much the worst thing to combine with long hair. When I was little, my brother, my friend, and I decided to play a game that involved scooping up handfuls of sand from the sand volleyball court at our apartment complex and throwing it at each other. This, as you might imagine, quickly degraded into us pushing each other in the sand, rolling around in the sand, and just generally making a terrible mess. I swear, I was scrubbing grit off of my scalp and out of my waist-length hair for at least three weeks.

I currently, at this moment, have coffee in my hair.
I wanted natural lowlights, so I used a really strong paste of instant decaf & water and picked up a few locks on the canopy and the next layer below. I painted each dry lock root with the coffee paste and then wrapped the lock around the brush and then pulled the brush out and squeezed the coffee out of the brush on the lock ends to distribute color on just that lock. I used a clean BIG eyeshadow brush, but a small blush brush would work too.
I'm going to rinse them out when the paste is dry, I might defuse it along.

I have been looking for a solution to my over brassy lemon highlights on my ash blond hair, I hope this is a goodie.
