Carlos left Devachan
When he cut my hair last month he had mentioned he wasn't sure if he'd be there the next time I came in. So I gave him my email...well, I just received an email that he left and is now at Mario Diab Salon...
This is to inform you that Carlos is no longer at Devachan Salon as of August 28th due to some personal and political reasons. But if you are still interested in having him as your stylist, he is now located at: Mario Diab Salon
62 Crosby Street
Btw Spring + Broome
Lower Level of The Mezzanine Spa
(212) 226 - 6595
So please feel free to call us for your next appointment or stop by the new location to visit and check out the salon, or go to WWW.MarioDiab.Com for more info. Carlos would like to thank those, for giving him the opportunity and knowledge of experiencing all the various textures of curls. And lets not forget, those amazing conversations and laughter.
Thank you in advance and hope to hear from you soon.
Hmmm, I wonder if his prices will be any cheaper. I can't see following him to another salon though. I go to Devachan because I like that they use the products on me and that they're CG. I like knowing that my curls are safe there! I guess I'll have to find someone new. Does anyone have a favorite stylist at Devachan? I need someone for cut and highlights! I currently go to Vida but she's very expensive as well.

If Carlos really is that good with curls, wouldn't he still be cg amenable? If I really liked his cuts, I'd ask him before leaving him.

I would follow the stylist I love to a new salon. Yeah, it's a new salon, but it's not like everything he knows and believes about curly hair has just gone out the window. They may not have Deva products in the new one (or they may, you won't know until you check), but I'm sure he is still aware of ingredients and what his clients want.

Are the prices at the new salon more reasonable?

Oh that's really cool that he still uses the products! I wonder about the prices as well because he is way to expensive for me. Another factor for me staying at Deva is that I like the pintura highlighting on my hair. Also I just really love the atmosphere and the yummy iced tea they serve!

Re: Carlos left Devachan
Did this email come from him? Or from one of the salons? I think it's odd that he would say he left for personal and political reasons. Something about it irks me. Why wouldn't you just say that you left?
Am I the only one who finds that strange?

I used to use Carlos but wanted a change and went to Melissa. She was fine and cheaper, $95 last time. But I then went to Beehive at $75, to Casey who uses Deva products and gives a decent cut. Color is too expensive now at Devachan, so I go to the Aveda Institute for coloring my gray. The highlights are still prominent so for the past two times I just had one process which was $40, a great price. Now they don't know how to style curls, so I just disregard what they do and advise them. Last time, the girl was better than the first. They use their shampoo but it doesn't seem to have affected my hair. I will try highlights there too when I need them at $75 which is half the price of Devachan. Aveda has nice products and I like saving the money. I wouldn't go to them for a cut.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. I am dying to find out what "personal and political reasons" means. I wish there was a way that someone can find out what really happened.

The email came from the new salon. I'm guessing Carlos had some input as to what went out in the email. I was a little surprised by the wording of the email, myself. Maybe it was Lorraine who was forcing the stylists to raise their prices and Carlos said ENOUGH...this is crazy to charge these beautiful ladies such outlandish prices for a haircut. I will no longer stand for this. I'm putting my foot down, leaving Devachan and taking all my lovely clients with me!!!

Somehow I don't think he said that. There must have been some other reason which I would love to know too.

Thank you for the update! I LOVE Carlos and even though I now live in Colorado, I would fly back to NY 1x/year to see him.
Glad I know where to find him now. I hope his new salon treats him better and doesn't quadruple book him.

I second that thank you!
Get this...I called Devachan last week for an appointment with Carlos and was told that "he is in Europe"! I said I wanted to make my appointment for October and was told "we aren't sure when he'll be back". They then tried to get me to book with this person I hadn't heard of (at the same price, of course).
I knew something sounded shady so my friend told me to check this site. I'm so glad I did! I booked my appt. with Carlos and turns out he's just down the street from Devachan!
Thx again

Prices are on the website. I'm certain Carlos would be considered a senior stylist. It looks like the same price range as Devachan.

Such a weird lie like that would make me not want to go back.
It isn't unusual for a salon to say that someone has left but refuse to give new contact info. Devachan could've done that.

I'm looking at the prices you ladies pay for haircuts and I'm appalled. Is it really worth $95 for a HC? The stylist I've used for the last couple of years does great with curly hair (I really need a trim for the dead ends, but I've never had a pyramid problem with growing out hair since I've gone to her) and I can get out of there for less than $40 and that is a good tip too.
I go to our local beauty school for the color and they do a fantastic job---even my stylist admired it. And I can get out of there for around $35 and again, a good tip. I lived in Houston for years and in the '80s paid around $40 for a cut...but I can imagine what it is now for that stylist.

For color I go to an aveda school, but they don't know how to style curly hair. In NYC, $95 is an average. I think cutting is more dangerous with an inexperienced person as you live with that for a while. Color is more of a universal thing among hair types than curly hair cut and style. It is worth it.
