What a weird comment to make...

Yesterday, this guy I work with but am not friends with started making conversation...I told him my sister was getting married, he's asking me about that...he asks me if my sister and I look alike, I go, "Kinda, but she has very straight hair." He keeps asking questions, then goes:

Him: So, you must be pretty jealous of her.

Me: Why?

(I was ASSUMING he was going to say, "Because she's getting married", which I am pretty sick of people assuming)

Him: Because she has straight hair...

Me: No, I'm not jealous of that...why would I be?

Him: Don't all girls who have curly hair want straight hair?

Me: Not me, but thanks for asking! (I gave him a "thumbs-up" and turned back to my work.)
Just a common stereotype. I wouldn't expect him to know any better, although he should.

Straight hair is obviously his preference but I'm glad you let him know it isn't yours!

Way to go. I had straw straight hair as a child and wanted curly hair, wouldn't take with rollers though. Then when I turned about 12 my hair started to get more wavy then curly-then I would blow dry it straight. After 3-4 years of doing that I gave up. And gave in to my curls.

I have noticed that the media doesn't like curly hair, unless it isn't natural. What I mean is curled on purpose to someone who has straight hair, so they of course appear to have perfect curls with no frizz.

Even magazines when they make people over, always seem to blow dry their hair straight. Just once I would like to see them show someone how to deal with their curls. Seems a lot of hairdressers would rather do that than deal with curly hair I guess.
I don't he meant anything by it. Some people just open their mouths without thinking. And, until we all discovered this board and some version of CG, how many of us wished we had straight hair? To be honest with myself, I would have to admit that I wished upon every star I could find for straight hair. Now that I get compliments though, I wouldn't trade my curly hair for straight.
3A/3B I think...
Modified CG: cowash Suave Berry Smoothie or Toasted Vanilla, cond TRESemme Vitamin E Moisture rich (I leave some in), Loreal Studio melting gel, Aussie sprunch to finish
Is it possibly he was trying to be flirty or making a lame joke in an officey type of way?

I wouldn't take it too personally, but then again I don't know the relationship between you and this coworker, how said line was delivered, etc.

It's such a stereotype though. Curly haired people must want straight hair and (I think to a less extent) vice vearsa.

I've heard it myself, the mother of a friend of mine asked me, the first time we met, was my hair natural. When I said yes, she replied 'its lovely....you must hate it though'....uh...NO! I mean, if I hated it, wouldn't I have it straightened?

People are funny sometimes
Think I'm 3b-ish...maybe some 3a there too...plus wavy roots....I'm just a mixed bag! CG since August '05
I can see why he thinks that since it seems like every girl under the sun straightens..but what a daft thing to say to a lovely curly head.
Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth. I sat at a table where were rich food and wine in abundance, and obsequious attendance, but sincerity and truth were not;
and I went away hungry from the inhospitable board.

Yeah, he could have saved himself by adding, 'Not that you SHOULD be jealous, 'cause your hair is great' or something!!!!!

Asking if somebody is jealous about ANYTHING just seems a little out-of-line for somebody who isn't a friend to say...I don't think it ever sounds polite...

"You must be jealous because your sister is getting married/has more money/is blonde/has kids/etc. etc. etc."
Apparently he tells another girl I work with how much he hates her hair curly every time she doesn't blow it straight.

Lovely guy.

Ignorant people...It seems as though more people are straightening their hair than ever before, and since you look different than most, that must be bad. People tend to dislike things that are different. If he always makes comments like that about others' appearances, he should be repoted to HR. I also applaud you for having restraint.

Okay, forgot to update this, but I found out he's said the same thing to at least three other girls I work with!

Another girl rolled her eyes and goes, "He tells me ALL THE TIME how much he hates curly hair on girls..."

Sick!

Funny thing about stereotypes is that a lot of time they are true. Most girls with curly hair my high school straightened or blow dried straight their hair, including me. I have two friends, one I work with straightens the other who I used to work with blow dries her hair-both claiming they have ugly frizzy curly hair, not nice like curls like mine(that was nice to hear). Most women here in Monterey County where I live who have curly hair seem to straighten it....you know how you can tell around the root area...kinda poofy-or lifted look? Too bad though.
Also when I was in school all who had blonde hair dyed it black and vice versa. So sometimes it does seem like people really want what they don't have. Let us embrace our curls and hope others will follow! Hooray for us!
Edited due to a cyberstalker. Sorry, guys.
