Default overconditioned vs underconditioned?

i dont know what it is.....i'm sure part of it must be the humidity/rain we've been getting, but it's gotta be something else, too; my hair has been awful these past few weeks and i really don't know why....i am not new to the cg thing and have had many successful months before, so i don't think it's poor product use....my hair has just been so fluffly and dry and cottony and undefined lately, no matter how much product i load in there...could it be overconditioned? or do i need a DT maybe? how can you tell the difference between dried out hair and overconditioned hair? if it is overconditioned, will a clarifying shampoo cut through it?
any thoughts suggestions would be greatly appreciated at this point...

Which products are you using...how often...how much?

If you say you are using DevaCurl No Poo every day and then one C in addition, for example, I'd say you're probably overconditioned.

Also, it's been very hot and humid lately (some places) and that always causes problems.

yes i do use the no poo/one c combo every day....i use a fair amount of both, followed by a leave-in, a little bit more one c in addition to the leave in (could this be the problem?) and gel. i am thinking you might be right....thanks for the response

My hair has been acting the same way. It's sort of stringy at the roots and then the ends are fluffy and undefined. It looks awful! Very frustrating. I'm beginning to think it may be overconditioning too, esp. with all the humid weather and moisture in the air.

It could be the change in humidity. usually hair that is overconditioned looks kind of frizzy from the roots to then ends. Hair that is underconditioned looks dry and brittle. I can say that if your hair has build up on it from shampoo or conditioner, a clarifying shampoo can strip it out. If your hair is overconditioned and because of that it has become dry, a clarifying shampoo could be too strong. Strong conditioners can dry hair out (it's kind of like giving a plant too much water). I know this isn't a real answer as to what you should do, but I hope it helps some.

Catsinwater, just wanted to let you know that I did an ACV rinse this afternoon and it seems to have really perked up my curls . I took my shower after working out and decided to just water wash with no conditioner and follow with a strong ACV rinse (1/4 cup to 4 cups water) and rinsed like heck with cool water. I styled as usual and my hair is looking pretty good. I think I'm going to lay off the conditioner and just water wash for a few days and see what happens. It's so hard though because I just love to condition . But I've been using some pretty conditioning gels and leave ins and I think that combined with my obsession with conditioning all the time has made my hair way too soft to hold a curl.

i have fixed the problem! thank you all again for the suggestions and responses....magoo, i would really like to try an acv rinse soon, but haven't had a chance yet - thanks so much for the idea!
i played around a little bit with what i had and my hair was definitely way over conditioned!
i also picked up some LOOB and have been having much better luck since experimenting with that, too

is it just me or does your hair dictate your general mood? i was having such a bad week last week and it was all because i knew my hair looked so awful....now i feel so much better!

thanks ladies!

Hi cats! I'm glad you got your hair in shape again. I have to chime in here that if I think my hair looks awful, then I feel awful. Sad but true. It's like I just want to hide me and/or my head!

when my hair is overconditioned, it feels limp. when it is underconditioned it feels crispy on the ends.

both give me frizz and loss of definition.
