Default Layers or not?

I've heard that it's good to get your hair trimmed every 6 weeks to get rid of split ends, but every time I go to the salon they ask if I want layers or not when I tell them I need a trim. Should I get layers every time, or will that just keep my hair from growing out? I want my hair to be much longer than it is, because it's pretty short when it's curly.

If you get layers, you only need to get them once, because when they trim your hair they should also trim the layers. They won't prevent your hair from growing, but not all of your hair will all be the same length, the layers will be shorter than the bottom which is the longest. HTH, because I got confused typing it.
