Hair won't curl - I give up

I know if I co-wash everday - even with a light conditioner like VO5 or Suave -- it's too much for my hair and I'll lose curl. I either just water wash or use a tiny dab of VO5 to scrub my scalp with. Or I'll use a low sulfate poo if needed and then I'll go back to regular co-washing after about 2 days or so. I do use a good moisturizing conditioner as a rinse out every time, though -- I like Mop Top Daily Co - it's moisturizing, but doesn't weigh my hair down. Also, BRHG gives me pretty stringy curls; I don't get much clumping or good curl formation at all when using this gel. It's evidently too strong for my fine hair. I don't know if a very moisturizing leave-in first would help or not -- something I still need to try.

ITA with this, the finger detangling was the first thing I noticed as a potential problem.

I rinse standing up. Then I flip over and finger through it all like you do. Then I re-rinse for just a few seconds to get it sopping wet again and into a few clumps. Then, as other said, I add product, do maybe a few scrunches with my hand. Then, finish a few more scrunches with my t-shirt.

Don't give up, just try new things : )

I tried finger-combing just at the roots and just scrunching the length. I also squished in gel and scrunched with the mf towel after putting the gel in sopping wet hair.

My hair was a little curlier (more wavy than curly); however, it was frizzier than usual. Thinking that's because of blotting out part of the gel, today I put in double the amount of gel to see if that helps.

I also got some Suave Healthy Curls Curl Enhancing Cream (that might not be the exact title - something like that - it's in a green tube). That may have been a mistake because it has dimethiconal in it. Right now I'm desperate!

Does anyone know if cocobetaine and Cocamidopropyl Betaine are the same thing? My shampoo has Cocamidopropyl Betaine in it, and I read that cocobetaine will remove dimethiconal, so I'm wondering if my shampoo will remove it. That is, if the cream works - I can't tell yet what it's going to do!

I feel much better. Thanks for the suggestions. Keep them coming - I'm not there yet!!

Do you use a leave in at all? That always helps me get more spirals. I like GF C&S and P Mitchell The Conditioner.
Every time I've used a leave in, it makes my hair frizzy. Do you have suggestions for a good leave in? I've tried Aloeba, and Suave conditioners (the ones in my sig line).

Leave ins that work for me are GF curl & shine, or .........crap.......can't think of what it is exactly........someone will know, it's the banana hibiscus leave in.

Fast food (again, can't think of who makes it) also was nice when I had that. But it does have protein.

Oh, you can also try using a creme styler, mixed with gel, as long as it's a moisturizing one. I use boots, and have used Jessicurl CC, and both worked just as well, if not better than using a leave in. (as far as getting more curls goes).

I also like the GF C&S leave in, My HG is PM the conditioner, you can get the generic at Sallys, it works the same.

All righty. I've got a lot of things to try, so thanks.

The creme styler I used today was indeed a mistake. It made my hair frizzy and poofy.

Many of the products suggested I've already tried and cannot use. Anything with amodimethicone (GF Curl & Shine), oil (any Jessicurl product), or protein simply screws up my hair, and that really limits what I can use. On the other hand, the Boots, Curl Junkie, and PM The Conditioner sound promising - I'm crossing my fingers that they don't have ingredients my hair can't handle. I'm sorry - I don't mean to be negative. I really appreciate all of the ideas; my hair just drives me crazy.

I'll keep experimenting, and at least the technique of not raking through the whole length of my hair definitely helped.

Maybe its the BRHG? I know for me, personally, this gel does not work at all. It actually pulls the curl out and leaves me with frizzy "cotton-candy" hair. However, I know TONS of people on this board do get great results with it....but my hair hates it.

Maybe it is overconditioning? If I am overconditioned (which happens to me very easily) I get no curl, just that "cotton-candy" look. I have never found a leave in that I could use with good results. Leave-ins are just a no-no to my hair.

ETA: Creme stylers tend to not work on my hair either. Same thing - puffy frizzy hair - unless I use a good gel with some hold over the creme styler.
2/b-2/c - I shampoo daily with non-sulfate shampoos - right now am *loving* L'Oreal Everpure shampoo and conditioner
For styling: homemade flax seed gel, Curl Keeper, and/or KCCC
Current favorite product: *KCCC*!!

Maybe its the BRHG? I know for me, personally, this gel does not work at all.

Maybe it is overconditioning?

If it's overconditioning, what do I do about that? Change my conditioner or don't condition as often?

This is frustrating. Thanks, everyone, for the encouragement.

Where do you get Boots? Looks like the Curl Junkie has ingredients that are bad for me. I haven't been able to find the ingredients for the Paul Mitchell conditioner yet.

I'm thinking about trying Boots and/or LOOB.

So far, the things I've tried haven't made much difference except on the first day when I used the same products as usual and just changed my technique.

Koukla72, Wow - thanks. Your ideas are so helpful. Thank you for taking the time to post that information. I'll definitely mull these things over.

Forgive my late-night delirium, but I think I've solved the mystery of why I can't get my hair to curl - for those who care.

I know Koukla72 said it and maybe others suggested it too...I think the key lies in the diffusing. I don't diffuse long enough. I was thinking about it, and both stylists who have made my hair super-curly completely diffused it and spent lots of time letting it twist around the diffuser fingers. They also did it mostly upside down.

Well, the problem is, I can't do that - especially not upside down. I have a disability (fibromyalgia and chronic Lyme disease) that causes a lot of pain, and bending over like that hurts my back, and holding the diffuser up hurts my arms and shoulders. Anyway, I think the fact that I'm only diffusing for a few minutes is the major malfunction.

I know a bonnet dryer doesn't do exactly the same thing as a diffuser, but I wonder if it would help some?

That's not to say that I don't need to try some other changes, like different products and techniques - but maybe I really do need to be happy to be simply wavy and not expect amazing curls since I'm not willing to make the effort to do the diffusing that would make it happen.

Anyway, that's my final thoughts before this thread dies! Thanks again to everyone for making me feel better and giving me lots of ideas!

So terrible about the Fibro and the LymeD. Here's a suggestion...I occasionally plop with a piece of super thin gauze fabric or a mesh sleep cap and diffuse through that. If you can bend over just long enough to put this on your head them diffuse through it that might be the answer to the upside down diffusing problem. Just a thought. Scunci makes a mesh sleep cap, that's the one I use.
