HELP!!! need a routine- pictures included.
Hey everyone. I'm a new poster.
Ok. so for a long time I've been on a "curly girl" routine. But I realized my products both have cones...no shampoo+cones=bad hair
Does anyone have hair similar to mine and have a routine they love where they use drugstore/sally beauty products? I really don't want to spend the money on ordering online. The only health store we have is GNC.
BTW, I don't use a diffuser but I would consider it. At this point I'm desperate!
So please suggest a routine for me! I'm sick of always having a bad hair day.

Welcome to nc!
Bad hair day? You're definitely not having one, the picture posted of your curls is adorable. You hair looks healthy and you have a nice curl pattern.
If you're interested in a little more volume, invest in a diffuser, you can get one at Sally's for $5 (or at least that's what they use to run).
Here is a website that has lots of recommends. Have fun.

I guess the problem really is that the hair starts off looking pretty decent but by the end of the day it is so so frizzy and it just looks like a mess. And some days it is just not clumpy. its just a bunch of stringy curls. and, I ALWAYS have frizz.

yes, i think our hair is alike!
I have been trying the jessicurl routine, the devacurl routine, and the vo5/cheapie gel routine. devacurl has actually been decent for me (altho i do like the jessicurl ingredients better- ! they're just too heavy for my hair all the time)
i do basically any of the drying methods listed, depending on the day.
i like the vo5 passionfruit smoothie conditioner and the totally twisted gel by herbal ess - for cheap recs.
something to think about as well, because we're wavies - you might want to invest in a good wide tooth comb - like one from bath and body shop - because on the days when you are frizzy and stringy, sometimes it helps to run the comb once thru your hair (imo)
anyways, i think your hair looks nice

what gels or styling aids are you using now? I'm using Herbal Essence gels. Either Set me up or Totally twisted. Those are CG friendly. Cheap too
And I use a diffuser to dry part way.

Hi and welcome to NC.com. I think your hair looks really healthy. Since you say you've been using so many cones in your hair, you might want to consider clarifying to get rid of any buildup from the cones before starting strictly CG again. You may or may not need to do this, but just wanted to suggest it.

Yes, get rid of the cone build up, and start again. I'll second the HE gel suggestion. I love Set Me Up! Diffusing will/should give you some volume, curls, bounce, etc.
Welcome!!
Lots of reading to do here - it gets overwhelming. Take your time. Take notes : )

thanks for the welcome I have a few questions, please.
For those who use the set me up/totally twisted, do you use the spray gel or the one you rub on with your hands?
Also, if I shampoo does that clear off all the cones?
Should I deep condition if I am using the v05? the deep conditioning treatments I've done before always seem to weigh my hair down and be really hard to wash out!
Would anyone who loves their hair mind posting their routine (steps you use for washing styling)?
Usually I cowash every/every other day. Then I scrunch my hair dry with a t shirt, scrunch in some gel and then lightly "fix" any areas that need special attention. Air dry and voila.

I use the gel (rub on your hands)
Depends on the ingredients in the shampoo. If it has sulfate in it, it's going to take care of the cones. Someone else will get more detailed about that.
There are many DT's you can do that will just water rinse out of your hair. But, if they weigh your hair down, and your hair is healthy, you may not need to do DT's. Dry hair needs DT's! If your hair is dry, you can make a homemade DT with things that are probably in your kitchen right now.

Welcome! Your hair looks healthy, so using the right products should give you a little more curl. Some wavies use a gentle shampoo once a week, others just CO wash. You will have to see how your scalp responds. You may have to wet your hair everyday, but sometimes a wavy can get 2nd day hair by sleeping on a satin pillowcase. On days you don't wash, be sure to scrub your scalp with your fingertips - not nails - and rinse really well before using conditioner to get out the tangles. After letting it sit a minute or so in your hair, rinse the CO out before applying gel. One trick is to add gel to dripping wet hair. It should feel like slimy seaweed while you scrunch in the product. Try diffusing upside down at first. This should give you some lift at the top of your head. Then diffuse each side. Diffusing for 10 - 15 minutes can set the gel and cut down on drying time. Then let air dry before scrunching out any crunch from the gel. The less you touch your hair, the less frizz will form. Hope these suggestions help. One thing to keep in mind though - Wavy hair can be unpredictable and will look different from day to day.

I use the SMU spray gel once hair is dry: emulsify between palms, scrunch. / didn't like TT.
Yes, poo will remove cones if it has a sulfate
If you hair is dry and damaged, then a DT weekly would help, BUT if your hair is healthy you should only DT when it feels dry or maybe once a month.
DT before you shampoo, I overnight DT then do my once a week poo the next morning OR I'll apply DT 20 minutes before I jump in the shower and poo. HTH

Totally twisted is CG friendly?? does that mean it has no cones?
Because I swear the conditioner does have cones. Just read it last night.

The gel is CG, but the conditioner has cones.

thank you for all the advice and tips!
i haven't used a diffuser before because I've been too afraid that it would make my hair too dry and frizzy. is there any special methodology to using the diffuser? how often do you all use it?

Your hair reminds me a lot of my hair. I don't like the HE gels, but that's me. I prefer Sebastian Hi Contrast or Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee. For Co-wash, I am currently using V05 vanilla mint tea, and to condition i find i need something more moisturizing than most drugstore brands can offer, though one good drugstore condish is Aussie 3-minute miracle original formula (NOT the DEEEEP). I Co-wash every other day, water wash on the others, shampoo with Elucence Moisture Benefits Shampoo once a week to 2 weeks, and condition every day regardless of how i wash. I used to use Activate conditioner, but they changed the formula, so I ordered some DevaCurl OneC and also NoPoo to try (haven't gotten them yet, though). I don't do DT's, I find my hair gets weighed down too easily. After I shower, I blot with a microfiber towel I bought in the automotive section of Wal-Mart, and then scrunch in gel. Then I diffuse-- I pretty much have to diffuse, as my hair is so fine and easily weighed down, it seems flat to me if i don't. What I do is use a hair dryer with a fingerbowl diffuser attachment and use it on the low setting. I put my hair in, turn it on, let it sit without moving it, turn it off, take the hair out, do the next section. I don't necessarily wait until each section is dry before moving, just wait as long as I can handle the heat. I dry my hair anywhere from 50-95% dry. I tend to get longer-lasting volume the more I dry it, but it can make your hair feel parched after a while. And that's my routine.

totally twisted
I thought I saw cones in this product so I didn't buy it. Got set me up instead. Love it and Aussie's tizz no frizz. Maybe I mistook that cone I saw for a bad one?

Tizz no frizz is good stuff too. I will use it (mixed with a little water in the palm of my hand) to smooth away any frizzies, and for 2nd day hair.
