Recoil reformulated

Has anyone else noticed this? Could someone please explain to me why companies do this? Anyways, I finished a tube of recoil yesterday so today I used my brand new one. I don't know if it was the smell that clued me in (smells less vanilla-y) or what but something didn't seem right. So I dug out my empty container from the wastebasket and noticed a longer ingredient list!

I don't have time to type the old ingredients out right now but here is the list of new ingredients courtesy of CurlMart:

water/aqua/eau, polyquaternium-55, hydroxypropyl starch, cetyl alcohol, stearalkonium chloride, stearyl alcohol, ceteareth-20, cetearyl alcohol, glycerin, corn starch modified, cetrimonium chloride, salvia officinalis (sage) leaf extract, urtica dioica (nettle) extract, chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract, humulus lupulus (hops) extract, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, melissa officinalis leaf extract, achillea millefolium extract, prunus serotina (wild cherry) bark extract, cymbopogon schoenanthus extract, calendula officinalis flower extract, sodium pca, polyquaternium-10, magnesium sulfate, silk amino acids, cocodimonium hydroxypropyl hydrolyzed keratin, panthenol, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, tetrasodium edta, parfum/ fragrance, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone

What do you ladies think? This, combined with Boots, has been my mainstay. I'm hoping it'll be even better than before (my hair does look promising today) but I just worry that overtime it will poop out on me.

Waaaah? Why are they messing with it? Don't get it.

The changes seem pretty minor though, so hopefully it works the same.

Here's the old list:

aqueous extracts of sage, nettle, chamomile, hops, rosemary balm mint, yarrow, cherry bark, lemongrass, and calendula, polyquaternium 55, hydroxypropyl starch, cetyl alcohol, stearalkonium chloride, stearyl alcohol, cetearth-20, cetearyl alcohol, glycerin, corn starch modified, cetrimonium chloride, napca, polyquaternium-10, magnesium sulfate, silk amino acids, cocodimonium hydroxypropyl hydrolyzed hair keratin, panthenol, tetrasodium edta, fragrance, methylchloroisothazolinone, methylisothiazolinone
Okay, I just popped both lists into MS Word in tables and compared line by line. The extracts, instead of being at the beginning, are now in ingred order. Then ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (a sunscreen...sorry, castella) was added.

Doodles, keep us up on your results!!!
Thanks laurabeth for posting the old ingredients!

There must be a mistake on CurlMart's site because I don't see the sunscreen listed on my tube.

We had no idea there had been an ingredient change.

I'll investigate.

Is this new? I have an email into the folks at AG and will report back.

So would that mean they reformulated twice? lol Because my new tube has everything but the ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate.

Thanks Gretchen!

Well, I still have a partial tube of the old stuff to use this winter.

The reason hair product companies keep adding sunscreens of any kind is because then they can claim color protection. However, as our CurlChemist told us before, this isn't regulated by anyone so (A) it's hard to determine how much of these sunscreen additives would be necessary to actually protect color and (B) it's not listed as an active ingredient on the label nor does it list the percentage of the sunscreen active because it's not a drug like skin sunscreen and therefore not regulated by the FDA.

Sigh....can't they leave well enough alone and come out with a second product called Re:coil Anti:solar? (If they read this, they are welcome to claim the Anti:solar name since I just invented it on the fly.)
AWG last week. Re:coil this week! Why do they keep messing with the products I use!!!!!

Sorry for the rant.
Rant away pinksugar! I'm finding it to be quite frustrating as well.

Hello gals,

I emailed our contact at AG, and she contacted the CEO and co-founder of the company. He was so kind as to write back a rather extensive explanation, which I'll abbreviate here:

I have to say I am extremely impressed by the support and level of attention NaturallyCurly.com clients pay to their products and to their ingredients (and for which we thank you!!).

Straight out of the gate let me tell you we have made one minor change to the re:coil curl activator formulation; we have added a sunscreen. This was done for two beneficial reasons; reason number one is to help protect your hair from sun damage and reason number two is to help protect your favourite product from uva/uvb damage which can quickly diminish the productís shelf life. (re:coil, like all AG products, has a two year shelf life from the date of manufacture). Most AG products contain sunscreen and its addition to the formula has not and will not change the performance characteristics of your favorite product.

The other change we have made is purely to the labeling and specifically to the order that the ingredients are now required, by international law, to be listed. . . . And in order to comply with each countryís packaging laws, we as manufacturers have very specific ways in which we must list the ingredients on our packaging.

... Again, no change to the productís formula has been made other than the addition of sunscreen noted above. This labeling change was merely done in order to be globally compliant with new and current regulations.

...I assure you your re:coil formula is as important to us as your support is. Without naturallycurly.comís clients, re:coil would not have enjoyed the success it has over the years and I would like to thank you for your support.
So, as many of you correctly pointed out, a sunscreen was added. I'm very sorry we didn't have better information about this earlier. We will make a point to let mfgrs know the level of concern about ingredient changes our readers have, and encourage them to share with us information related to such.
