Do you think women over 40 should have short hair?

I think if your hair looks good and long hair looks good on you, it doesn't matter if you're 95 years old!! If your hair isn't healthy and looks like crap and you don't have the face for long hair, then it's not going to look good on you even if you're 16! I didn't start growing my hair long from having it very short until I was well past 40 and I've had so many people tell me how good it looks and also how it makes me long 10 years younger, so I think the "short hair after 40" thing is a big bunch of hooey!!

bunch of bologna. Age and hair style shouldn't have anything to do with each other.
WHAT has age to do with it? I can't believe they're still almost universally pushing short hair just because one turns 40. IMO, this is part of the American way of pushing a generic style on people in a lot of these makeovers. Some folks look better, but for others, being "made-over" in this way takes away their personality and character. It depends on the the woman's hair, features, lifestyle, overall look, etc. Here I am, at age 60, with longer hair than I've had in quite awhile, and it's looking BETTER as it grows out. But then, I'm slim, and like to wear unusual clothing and colors, so this suits me. About coloring, that's a personal thing. Some folks look lovely with silver hair, others have the kind of grey and complexion where it makes them look washed-out and tired(I'm in this group, even though my greys underneath this color are white).

[quote="snithia"]You should wear whatever suits your face shape and hair type. I think it should have some style no matter your age. Long, stringy stuck up in a bun or ponytail all the time isn't flattering at any age.

I totally agree .... I recently cut my hair above my shoulders, because the length was really dragging me down. I think it is all about face shape and the health of your hair. I think long healthy hair is beautiful, but there is nothing worse than long hair that looks like it died years ago and the person didn't know enough to lie down
Type: 3a fine & dense, with normal porosity, terrible product junkie
ROUTINE: LI, enhancer, gel, plop with Curlease towel, serum product (either CIAB or Gel-les'c), clip & diffuse.
Too many favourite products to list ... I finally have my routine that works and alot of products to choose from. My product stash is huge, but well loved !!!
I think it has less to do with age and more with your face shape and condition and style of your hair. My ex's mother had long hair that looked awful! It was dry and flat, and she parted it down the middle. The ends were really thin and scraggly looking. She would have looked 10 years younger if she just cut some off. It was obvious that she wasn't willing or able to adjust from her young hippie days. However, some people can pull it off, I just think you have to keep your hair in good condition and keep a good cut that doesn't drag your face down.

I'll be cutting my hair when I reach about 40. I don't think it has to be "short" but I don't like it especially "long" either. I don't think really long hair looks polished enough for a middle aged woman. JMO, though.

Yeah, I'll never go for the stereotypical "mom" cut. It wouldn't work with my face or hair.

when i'm in my 40's, i definitley want bsl silvery curls!! i personally think this is beautiful, even if some people think gray = bad. like others have said, it depends on the preference of the person. there are no "should"s or "should not"s in this case, IMO.

I think women should really do what looks best for themselves as individuals. I was never one to go along with trends and the in things to do.
Outdated concept. Age should have nothing to do with it.

I"m 48. I just got it cut in Oct from below BSL when wet to below my shoulders when dry...I'm enjoying it and won't cut it anytime soon. Plus, I had it cut 'pixie' style after I had a stroke in '94 and really disliked it, but I couldn't style it so.

I do have times when I wish I could wear those short, sleek, sexy cuts...but I get over it. And I do color...I'm a blonde and when it gets gray in it, it will look really blah. So I color/highlight it. I go to our local beauty school and they do an amazing job. My last hairdresser thought they did a great job when I went in. Their grads get jobs at Aveda salons, nice independents. I'm not sure any have gone to the 'clip joints'. except for one older male student a couple of years ago that wanted a barber shop.

I was told to wear my own hair super-short, but because it was curly, not because of my age (this was when I was a kid). Super-short hair is easier because then you don't need to go crazy straightening it and making it look "nice." As an adult, I did get two super-short haircuts, but it was because I had sudden urges to look like Halle Berry at the 2001 Oscars, not because of anything else.

Having said all that, I hate the idea of cutting your hair short at 40 just because you turn 40. If your hair is in good condition and you wear it in a style that flatters you, it can be long, short, or anywhere in between.

I've gotten more compliments on my hair in the 2 years that it's been going grey than I got in the other 48 years of my life! I think the combination of grey, curly, and long makes it stand out and people notice it more.
