curly on top, bottom layers straight?!
So my hair is supersuper curly on the top layer, but under that and in the back its pretty straight. a bit wavy but not much more. ive finally, through this website, figured out how to make my curls shiny and pretty, but my hair is still weird-looking just cause of the straight back/bottom. ive tried putting recoil on those parts to curl them up more, but it doesnt do much for that part.
any suggestions?

Hi, I'm not much help but mine is the same, underneath, specially at the back, it couldn't even be called wavy...just slightly kinky and very wiry.
Plopping helps a little, but that only gives s-waves...I reckon only a curling iron or rollers make any substantial difference.

I have been reading this board for years, and this topic seems to come up fairly often. I have the same problem, as do many curlies. After much reading and trial, there really seems to be no solution to this. I find that even a curling iron isn't that helpful. While the rest of my hair will hold heat styled curls for days, that section just gets straightish again by noon.
Some girls have luck scrunching Gelebration into that spot. Some get their underneath layer cut shorter. I just use a curling iron and try not to let it bother me too much.
It still does though.

I just have my stylist cut my underlayer a little shorter so it doesn't peek out. I don't put any special effort into trying to make it curl more than it does- no one it going to see it. Anyway, it's so much silkier than the rest of my hair, sometimes I just enjoy petting it. LOL

I feel your pain -- I am a 3a on top and pin-straight at the nape of the neck. It's always been like that. Before CG my stylists cut it shorter than the rest so it wouldn't stick out. Now that I get dry cuts, the stylists know how to trim it so it is just another layer at the bottom and grows out pretty seamlessly for a couple of months. It is less of a problem now that my hair is long, too. When my hair was bobbed the straight nape bits were the first to grow out and stick out!

What PianoWire and Gemini13 said!
I long for consistency, but I know I'm never gonna get it. At Devachan, they used to tell me to scrunch more and it would curl up, but it never worked for me.

I have the same issue. Though since I have had my hair cut dry by a deva trained stylist and I have been using most of the CG techniques my sides and the back by the nape of my neck have gotten curlier. There are still times though that those parts just rebel and go straight. Also if I put my sides up while excercising when I take them down any curl that was there is gone.

I have the same problem! I have really nice, defined 3b curls on top and stick straight hair underneath. I took a more drastic approach - I get mine permed twice a year. I only have the straight parts permed. It doesn't last too long...maybe 3 months or so, but it really is a nice three months while it's curly So far, no damage. I went to a beauty school last time to save some money. I recommend it!

I have the same problem. My stylist cut my top layer a little shorter and made sure the very bottom layer didn't stick out too much. The way she layered it really helped all my hair to curl more.
She also showed me a really cool clipping method that I keep meaning to take pics of to show you all. It involves putting clips all over your head. This lifts the top layers up so that they don't weigh down the bottom while everythign is drying.
I also find that diffusing helps because my hair is so long that when it air dries, the weight of the water pulls a lot of curl out.

Oh please, please post those pics! My hair is heavy so it sounds like that method would really help while drying.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has this problem. One good thing is that when I'm bored I fiddle with my straight hair on the bottom and it never gets frizzy or messed up.

I know the feeling
Same here! I brought this up to a stylist I had several years ago and she told me to use that Sexy Hair Mousse in the red can(not sure if it's around anymore). But anyway, don't you wish the rest of your hair was as smooth, shiny and soft as the bottom layer!? k

Add me to the list - I had the bottom layer permed a few years ago and it lasted maybe three weeks. My hair is just not used to chemical treatments!
I wear my hair up almost every day, but when I do wear it down, I always catch myself twirling the parts right behind my ears - so silky!
Even when I try to wear my hair down, the wind/rain/my husband messing with it ruins the curl, so it gets pulled up anyway.

me too. top is 2b/c... bottom is defnatly a 1.... I am new to being curly (didn't know, really) so I have been experimenting. nothing really seems to help once its dry... I think that just doing the top a little more wavy less curly will just help it blend better at least for me... I think I like that better on me anyway

had good results with plopping overnight but leaving the underlayer out of the plop and and putting it in two tight buns while still wet. It gave me good s-waves and some curls. Not ideal, but a more consistent texture than before. Kinda uncomfortable to sleep in, though. Not sure if I could do it everyday. I wish there was some way to rearrange the plop so that the underlayers got more of scrunch!

I have mainly a 3b/c mix and the hair at the nape of my neck is stick straight. So silky smooth and soft that it can't even hold curl from a curling iron. That portion of my hair is always inches shorter than the rest to help it blend in. If I'm going somewhere special then when I style my hair I twist those pieces into little coils and bobby pin them. When they're dry I take out the bobby pins and I have some sort of curl/wave.
Those are my only solutions. Products and plopping don't do much for my wacky straight hair section.

Good idea, SarahGrace! I'll have to try that pinning method.
I have the same problem with the very bottom layer. The straightest--and strangest--part is right behind my ears. The stylists always have to cut the back layer shorter, then they have to pull the pieces from behind the ears forward and cut that even shorter! IDK what it is, but even though they should fall to the back, they will go forward and drape over my shoulders, straight! But it is so soft and smooth! Crazy curls!
ETA: my last stylist actually said it's like it's a whole different head from under the ears down.

Add me to the list! 2b with a 1 on the bottom. I use a curling iron most days but that lasts about 15 minutes. I just started the CG method and hope to get a few waves under there!
