Ugh (warning, kinda long)

I know many curlies here will be able to relate to this, but... my HG cocktail has stopped working *sigh*. Actually, I don't know if it's my cocktail or my routine (or even the weather, for that matter), but in any case, I'm back to square one.

So frustrating!

I HAD been getting incredible success with Robert Craig conditioner (used as CO and a leave-in), LOOB, and Aussie Aussome Volume gel, then diffusing after plopping for 10 min with a microfiber towel. But lately I've been getting poofy, frizzy, undefined, dry-looking (I say dry-looking because my hair doesn't actually feel dry, it just looks it) hair. On the rare occasion that my hair actually looks decent after styling/diffusing, it goes through the whole Cinderella syndrome and looks blah within a few hours--all poofy and lacking shine/bounce. The top goes flat, and the sides expand, so I'm looking a bit like Rosannadanna (well, maybe not that bad, but certainly not good, either).

At first I thought it was the proteins in my RC conditioner, so I switched to a no protein conditioner for a few days (after clarifying with an ACV rinse), but that didn't really make a difference. I've also been doing my WTD religiously--also not really making a difference.

Then I thought it was the diffusing, so I started air-drying again (which of course, messes with the volume, but then again, some products I'm experimenting with have so little hold that I'm Ms. Poofy by midday anyhow--too MUCH fluff/volume).

Then I thought maybe it was my products. I started playing around again with my Jessicurl styling products (which, once upon a time, gave me PERFECT results that I can't seem to be able to recreate anymore no matter what I do), tried Boots pink creme (and with it possibly being discontinued, I'm not sure I want to get attached to it! Not that it's given me fabulous, to-die-for results), gone back to using CK again.

Nothing's bringing my hair out of its funk.

I'm at the point where I'm tempted to get a haircut just to liven it up a bit, but with the slooooooooooow rate at which my hair grows (and this is with taking a daily "hair formula" vitamin), any kind of trim at this point would pretty much get rid of what growth I've managed to get in the last 4 months. Not ideal when one is trying to grow her hair out to bra-strap length (right now it's just starting to skim my shoulders).

Anyway, not sure whether I'll be able to stumble upon the answer soon, but I did feel like venting--I know y'all will understand my frustration.

If your hair looks dry, but doesn't feel dry.. maybe it's overconditioned?
Location: North NJ or NYC
Definitely a possibility... I do tend to get addicted to my conditioners, particularly when I like them . Maybe I'll try to wean myself off by not using a leave-in, although if I'm going to use LOOB, my hair really WILL feel dry if I don't use a leave-in underneath.

Why does my hair have to get so picky?

I'm in agreement that it sounds like overconditioning.

Try Shea Moisture Shea Butter Leave in, you're going through exactly what was happening to me, you can get a sample at sistasplace.com. I apply it after conditioning in the shower, work it through hair while soaking wet and apply gel on top. It's been great.

You can try out a nice sized sample for $4 plus S&H, worth it.

thanks, CurlyinColorado!!

jeamaria: yes, I clarified with ACV--should I clarify with shampoo, too? The ACV rinse seemed to help a teensy bit, but my hair still ended up poofy and ill-defined by the end of the day .

I finally bit the bullet and got my hair cut the other day. Or rather, I had layers put in. I already had very subtle layers, but I think it was too subtle, so my hair was still too heavy and just sort of laid there, now that it's getting longer. I decided to be bold and get more defined layers, which is always a risk, so I went with someone who had cut my mom's hair and did a great job with it--he really brought out her curls!

Incidentally, this guy cuts at a barbershop that, quite honestly, I would have never walked into and I have to confess, while he was cutting my hair, he seemed so distracted (he was even watching a football game at the time) that I thought for sure I was making a mistake. It also looked as though he was cutting too much hair, even though I had told him to keep as much of the length as possible (as I didn't want to wait another 4 months to recover any growth LOL).

Well much to my shock, this turned out to be the BEST HAIRCUT I'VE EVER HAD. Holy moly, the shape is gorgeous, and my curls sprang to life! The layers are PERFECT--they're defined, but not in a "I chopped the hell out of my hair" way, but just face-framing and adding bounce to my hair. And the best part is, he DID manage to keep the length. Actually my hair looks longer now than it did before I cut it (which I can't figure out, because he was really going away at it with the scissors LOL).

All for $10 plus tip--I am soooo going back to this guy again. He is better than any high-priced stylist I've ever gone to. He may not seem as though he's capable (or seem as though he listens to what you want), but I think he's some sort of genius, because he just sort of snip, snip, snipped, and the outcome turned out fabulous.

I'm still in shock over how good it turned out. I was so sure I was going to hate it LOL! But I should have known, since my mom's hair is so pretty (and of course, my mother doesn't do anything to her hair--it's just naturally that way).

I'm glad you got good results from the haircut.

I was going to say, from reading your earlier post, LOOB really messed up my hair real good. There's a 'cone in there that's water soluble for most people, but it turned out I got build up from it. My hair was beautiful with the LOOB for about 2 months. Then it was a disaster, very much like how you described yours being, for about 2 more months. I had to use increasingly harsh shampoos to remove the build up.

Now my hair's 100% improved and I will never use LOOB again.
Ten DOLLAS!?!??!?

I wish I could find someone who would cut my hair for that little!!!!!!!!!!!!! And have it be the best haircut ever! Lucky you!!! Do you have pics?

I don't have pics, but I will take some soon and post .

I didn't have the best hair day today, but it still looked decent. I've been using Too Shea as my conditioner the last few days, and I keep forgetting how greasy my hair gets with this stuff *sigh*. Besides, I can't stay away from my beloved Robert Craig for too long, so I may have to return to my RC conditioner tomorrow.

wild~hair: oh boy, sounds like maybe LOOB has done a number on my hair too . Ugh. Any ideas for substitutes?? I love the clumping and curl formation I get with this stuff! I could use up the practically full jar of pink Boots cream I have, but I get really nervous about developing an addiction for something that may get discontinued LOL. Or if worse comes to worst, I could use Rockin' Ringlets as a curl enhancer and just use a strong hold gel (my beloved Aussie Aussome Volume tends to wimp out when paired with the Jessicurl stylers, so I may have to give something like BRHG a try).
