my new clumping method *updated w/ pics

I tried "unicorning" with Joiwhip last night and made a mess of it when I tried diffusing this morning. Like Banjocurl, I think seeing pics of the process would help a lot.

Then again, I'm thinking my curl pattern may be a lot looser than yours so perhaps it won't work for me.

Oh well, cool discovery - glad it works so well for you!

The unicorn style didnt work for me. Maybe it's because I'm more of a wavy? It actually pulled out my waves. It would be nice for those days where I want a softer, looser wave though.

Didn't have great unicorn luck either. Although, I did forget to bring LOOB in the shower, so I had to use CK and some crappy gel I had in there. But, while I didn't get the results I wanted, I was pleasantly surprised by what I got. Loose, full waves, and tons of great volume at my roots, which never happens w/o elaborate clipping while I air dry.

I am definitely going to try tomorrow w/ LOOB for better clumping.
Wow! You're hair looks great! I am going to try it as soon as possible. I've been looking for a reason to try the LOOB It's been sitting in my product drawer since I bought it... lol

This is a brilliant idea! I can see why it would work so well.

I can see why generous product application--until you can really feel the products in your hair--would be a necessary step so maybe that's why using a mousse (shell7 or a product that requires sparing application (like re:coil) wouldn't work with this method.
I tried this yesterday and today and had pretty good results. I have not plopped in about 6 months so I did not leave it up long - just long enough to get dressed. What I liked is that it pulled my front back so when I took it down and diffused (pixiecurl diffusing method) I was able to make my hair stay off my face. I will keep doing it as even the short plop gets my hair dryer faster than my scrunching with the tshirt method.

I tried it to - it has great potential. My only 'problem' is it really makes me curly. Ok, that sounds totally weird, but I try to make my curls more loose - I like the length better that way. But, I'm going to keep working at it, maybe if I didn't diffuse and just let it hang and dry.......I'll keep working on it.
THANKS for the tip - love it!

How do you loosen up your curl pattern? I have been doing a thing where I hand -shape the curl (in my fotki). I'm curious as to how you do it... (my hair is much much curlier than yours of course)
3b, and increasingly c pieces... my curls will always be a little confused, but that is just fine!

Plus, I always mix either condish or boots with whatever gel I'm using.
I let it air dry - no diffusing.
The way I plop. I have no idea how to explain this, but I don't scrunch it up, and I keep the t-shirt on my head very loose and only leave it on for about 3 minutes.
I also give any super curls a little tug while they are wet.

WOW!! I've also smoothed my hair into one big unicorn horn while in the shower, but never thought to leave it that way before plopping and diffusing. I will give it a try soon, because I would love to be curlier at the roots. Thanks for sharing a new technique!

It gave me some lift on top. I think because that is where you make the 'horn'. I am looking for more curl so this has that potential but I am scared to leave it in the plop too long - I was getting bad hair when I used to plop.

alright, i added pictures to my clumping fotki album of how it looks wet while unicorning.

i'm glad some other people are having success with this! and for those of you who i led astray--i'm sorry!! but that is the life of curlies isn't it, trying new things, some work and most don't.

thanks again for the very nice compliments

hopefully those pictures help you get a better idea of what i do with my hair! i've never been a really good explainer.

I tried a modified version of the unicorn today because I was afraid I might lose curl. Since my sides are shorter and have some layers still growing out, I thought they might get pulled out too straight. Anyway, I just did a very, very loose "horn" and then scrunched it a bit before plopping. I'm having a very good hair day with some good spiraling, but I don't know if it's from the unicorn/plopping or my combo of Aloe Aruba Gel w/Abba Weightless on top -- my hair really likes this product combo.

WOW, shellynot, after looking at your wet pics, you can really see how long your hair actually is. I bet this method will really work well when my hair gets longer. Thanks for sharing!!

Wow, I definitely want to try this. I only plopped once with not-so-great results (my hair couldn't stay in the t-shirt), but I guess I can try again. How long should long-haired/thick curlies plop? My hair retains A LOT of water and takes forever to dry.

BTW, shellynot, your hair is gorgeous! It looks so shiny and healthy.
2a/M-C/ii hair. Super long.
I'm thinking that this works best with quite long hair. My hair is a little past shoulder length, and I couldn't get this to work for me. I'll definitely try it again once it gets longer though!

i posted pictures from today so that you could see how it looks from A to B. (A being in the unicorn and B being dry). Again, some surface frizz because i went ice skating outside today, but you can see the consistency
