Default Does anyone else have to do this?

Does anyone else have to smooth product on their underside before they scrunch it in?

I do. My hair is heavily layered so the underside doesn't even get included in the normal scrunching motions.

If you don't, do you get left with an under layer of fluff kind of?

Pretty much. My underlayer is the curliest part of my hair, so it fortunately needs very little styling help to shrink into thick, bouncy coils. I spend all day boinging them...

In addition to smoothing on product to my underlayer, I also need to do the same to the top-back of my head while upright. I apply product upside-down, and since my hair is so thick and layered, the hair at that flat spot on the top-back of my head manages to get neglected while I'm scrunching upside-down. So I smooth some on top, flip over, smooth some on the bottom, and scrunch the rest in.

I wish I had an underlayer to boing! My underlayer is pretty much straight-wavy. I've have cowlick issues with the top-back of my head. Thats what my sectioning clips are for!
