I wear my hair back a lot, especially now that I'm growing it out and it's at an awkward length. I usually wear coated rubber bands, but my hairdresser noticed some breaking off at my ponytail line. She said that even coated bands damage the hair shaft, and I should only wear soft scrunchies. I'll wear neutral colored thin scrunchies sometimes, but is this my only alternative? Barrettes and claw clips give me headaches, so I rarely wear those unless I'm going to a formal event when my hair isn't cooperating so I have to pull it back. Do you notice damage even with the bands that have the thick coating on them (I bought some of those). Do I have to pull out my scrunchie collection? I'm sure my hairdresser is right - that they are best for my hair when I'm wearing it back frequently, but I feel like it's 1991 all over again when I wear one.
I have not noticed any damage with the ouchless covered hair rubberband thingies, but I try to alernate what I use. I would recommend trying other styles and ways to secure your head. If you don't like clips, bobby pins are an option. I wore my hair up for a month as a challenge and wore braids (with elastic on the ends), and lots of buns that I secured with small clips. I also found ways to use clips that was easier on my head and actually much more comfortable than wearing a normal ponytail.
3B with some 3a. Fell off but am now back on the CG bandwagon and looking for my HG products.

I want to learn how to do a bun secured with bobby pins. I've tried it with a cinnamon bun, but pieces flew out everywhere. My hair is layered, which makes updos difficult. It's really too short to do much of anything with now except a ponytail, but I'm looking forward to having more options when it gets longer. It's only slightly layered now so I should have an easier time with updos once it gets a bit longer. I'd like to try hair sticks too, maybe, but my hair is on the fine side, and I'm afraid they wouldn't hold.
I know that for me it is more damaging to avoid the scunci no damage bands. I have really long thick hair and it never stays in a bun or a pony with satin or silk scrunchies. I hace tried placing bobby pins in with them and I end up with a headache.

Regardless of WHAT you use, it sounds like you have been putting it up in the same spot daily. It is important to vary your hair style because putting it up in the same spot and position can put a lot of stress on one area. Also, anything you use should not be too tight or pulling. Definitely avoid the metal clasp bands.
