My Curly Hair Needs Your Help!

Hi there! I am new to this site & am so excited to see a website dedicated to curly hair! I'm even more excited because I have a dilemma with my curly hair & have tried for years now to fix it.

In my younger years, I hated my curly hair. I straightened it everyday (sometimes with the clothing iron). YIKES! Terrible, I know! Take a look at the photos below. I have VERY healthy hair, after years of working to get it that way, but NOT healthy curls!

Now, I still straighten every day, but NOT cause I want to. Only because my hair will not curl on the top. On the bottom I have VERY curly hair still (I'm thinking because you see the top 1/2 of your head more, I probably have always straightened it more than I did the bottom). The top 1/2 is stick straight. AND it bugs me and looks so awful.

For years now I have tried & tried to remedy this with all sorts of products. I just got a short hair cut with lots of layers, hoping that would help! I also just bought an "at home perm" to do the top 1/2 of my head ONLY, but have heard this may be a disaster, so I have been holding off on using it (but the temptation is killing me).

I want to embrace my curly hair, but not if its going to look so icky! And, even when people tell me they love it, I don't because of the straight on top, so compliments just don't work. It doesn't take my mind off the major issue I have going on.

Now, for a minor issue. I have bangs. They have been straightened so much, they are always straight. Should I curl them with a curling iron to match my curlies. What is the best way to wear bangs with curly hair (I am trying to hide my large forehead).

Any help you can provide me with on either/or my major or minor issues, will be appreciated. Thank you from the bottom of my desperate little heart in advance!

P.S. These photos are of one of my "very good" curly days... and that doesn't happen too often, believe me! and my hair tends to look worse as the day goes on, the top is not only straight, but has no volume. I end up looking like a "mushroom head." The photo of me looking the camera dead on shows what I am talking about when I say "mushroom head!"

I'm in a similar situation, flat and "straight"/wavy on top and sides and super curly on the bottom, and underneath. I don't straighten my hair and my hair isn't real healthy...yet. Your hair looks really shiney and healthy, though I can see what you mean about help with the top. I wish I knew how to recurl...hopefully someone with more experience here will chime in with some tips or some products. Maybe you need more texturizing on top with your hair style/cut?

ur hair is gorgeous, my advice, dont fight ur natural hair. Go with it. Maybe find some methods to get the top slightly more curly, but, i think anyways is that ur hair is amazing.

Go with it, not against it

With your curly hair, fun personality, and cuteness in general, you could wear underpants on your head and still look good.

Your hair IS pretty. It seems to curl the longer it gets, like most 2Cs do. There are techniques to try that might help you get more volume on top. Have you tried diffusing upside down? Or clipping at the roots? Plopping? Keep reading these posts to learn more about your hair type and what methods to try. If you start treating your hair more gently - stop straightening it regularly, shampoo less, condition more - your natural curl will eventually return. Try growing the bangs out and they may start to get some curl, too, once they are longer. Don't give up! Accept your unique curl pattern and work with you hair to make it look its best.

I don't have any good long term solution for you. I am having the same issue, straight shorter layers on top hiding wonderful curls underneath. What I have been doing though lately is relying heavily on smallish claw clips and doing a half up / half down kind of thing. This way the top is pulled up and back and the "good part" is fully visible.
Maybe you could try this. Use the Curly Girl routine to care for all of your hair. Then, when styling, use clips to create pin curls on top, instead of just lifting the hair.

Whatever you do, don't fight your curls. They're beautiful. Period.
