Straightened my hair for the holidays

It was the first time I've had it straight in 4 years so I was curious to see what my family would say. My MIL asked if I dyed it because it looked lighter. She really liked it...said it made me look "older". I dunno if that's good or bad! The first words out of my FIL's girlfriend was "What did you do to your hair?!" She was shocked and also asked if I had dyed it. My father said he really liked it. My mother (a fellow curly) just did a double take. I later asked her if it looked like I dyed it. She didn't think so but asked why I straightened it because she thought my curly hair was more "me". My husband was just in hair heavan!! He said it was because it was "different" and he really liked the fact that I was letting him touch it. Although, it took me a while to relax and stop cringing!

Relatives say the funniest things, don't they?

My (naturally blond, never colored) hair also looks lighter when straightened, especially on the ends. I think it's because when it clumps together and curls, you can't see through the individual hairs as easily so it looks darker curly.

The last time I straightened, my husband finally admitted to missing my curls. It's growing on him!

Last week, I got my hair blow-dried at the end of my appointment. At school, at least 30 people told me how great my hair looked. I couldn't decide whether they meant the straightness or the richer, deeper color of my highlights. But, still, it was really nice of them.

And my curls still haven't come back, so I'm going to go to extreme measures tonight. Wish me luck, and let this be a reminder of why I hate having fake straight hair.

I straightened too on a whim, first time in over a year, and the big comment I got, as well as the thing that surprised me the most, was how LONG it was! Almost bsl, curly it is a bit below my shoulders.

It was so much work! Ugh! Sometimes I think I put a ridiculous amount of effort into my curly routine, but now I think it is nothing compared to the time I put in to get it all straight!

I am still learning to 'love' my hair, but I'm getting there. It has only been a couple of months since I stopped straightening my bangs. It has taken some getting used and a lot of patience ... my bangs still have some growing to do before they will curl the way they should.

But I know that it is still better working with what I have, rather than trying to fight what I've been given. The best part of this whole 'being curly' thing is ... no more stress ... I was forever running to a mirror to see if my straightened bangs had developed wings or had pouffed out.

If I'm being totally honest though, I do envy those curlies who can straighten their hair so well that it looks like it is naturally straight. Even if I get it mine straightened, within a few hours, it starts expanding and looking like cotton candy.
