hate, hate my hair on top - shorter layers?

I'm due for a trim and that's on the 3rd of Jan so that might help. I think I need shorter layers on top. My stylist hasn't wanted to do that but she's going to have to because this isn't working at all.
If you form a circle around my head, about two inches all the way around - the top half is HORRIBLE!!! Straight and just ugly. The bottom half is great. Good curl and no problems.
What do you guys think? Shorter layers on top? Or what....
I've tried no condish on top, that didn't matter. I tried no gel and gel on top - no difference.

My stylist said my top layers need to grow out a little longer, too. As long as I plop and clip the top, it looks good on top even with the longer layers.

Do you use clips? Those seem to really help me! It could also be the weather too- less humidity equals looser curls for me in the winter.

I can't use clips, my hair is too fine and thin - they don't work - they just fall out.
I found a pic of me of about 7 years ago and I had below the shoulders hair length and the top layers are much shorter and it looks great. I'm going to take that pic in with me and just tell her, that is what I want. I hate these long upper layers! I tried straighening my hair last night and it just made frizz UGH

Isn't it common for 3a or 3b hair to be straighter up by the roots? Your hair sounds similar to mine, it's very straight up on top of my head, until a few inches down (the underneath layers are all very curly from scalp to ends). I find that it curls better with shorter layers. Just tell your stylist to cut the shorter layers and you will accept all responsibility!

Why does she not want to give you a short to medium layer, which to me is basically what it sounds like you want?

Is it not your hair?

Put her in a head lock, spin her around & give her a body slam!

Of course I'm just kidding! hee hee

I had medium layers, what it basically amounted to I guess, & my hair is between the middle of my back & top of my shoulders. That's what she gave me.
