hair genetics?

Hey I'm 16 and a guy and get my hair from my dad. Everyone in my family has straight hair except for us. I think our hair is about the same but his is way better! His has good wave on top and sides and is pretty curly in the back and looks curly when wet, mine is basically waves on side and in back and when it's wet it looks straight. If I get my hair from him shouldn't it be the same.

I think it may have to do with age though. I don't think his hair was always so curly but it's hard to tell from old pictures because in the 60's it was all combed out! I'm thinking because his hair is thinner than it used to be it curls more because it's not so heavy or it just has to do with age.
I just wonder if I'll ever have the same hair as my dad
I'm not a geneticist but I am majoring in genetics, so I can give you a simplified explanation.

In your family, it is likely you have a case of something called incomplete dominance. You can do a google search for the definition but an example of this would be if you crossed a red flower with a white flower and ended up with pink flowers. In this example, the red and white genes sort of combine to make a new color.

The same goes for hair. Your dad gave you a curly hair gene, and your mom gave you a straight hair gene. When these two combine, you get something that falls in between, in your case wavy hair.

Unfortunately, the interaction of genes that determine how curly your hair is is a complicated process, which I don't have time to explain here. It is possible that with age/changing hormones your hair will get more curly, but at this point you can't predict anything.

Hope that helps!
WOW! I actually got a reply from someone in genetics. haha. thanks a lot, makes total sense

Man, I bet your dad HATED his hair in the 60's. Reminds me of Micky Dolenz of the Monkees, how he used to 'straighten' his hair (remember how curly HIS was?), and it looked absolutely fried and awful when it was brushed down straight!

Now that I've typed that, I realize probably 90% of you won't know who the heck I am talking about!
Hair Type: 2B/3A hybrid, I believe. Had it short for about 5 years, and have since let it grow. Layers have brought out the curl...and I haven't gone 'straight' since!

I know who you're talking about, Kimmie! (And I'm only 22.) Roger Daltrey is another example of that. . . both of them look better with curly hair.

Also, interesting about the genetics. I have a straight-haired mother and a curly-haired father, and mine is wavy. My brother's is curly though!

The incomplete dominance theory gets contradicted when you throw African American hair into the equation. Omg I dont know where all this stuff that I'm writing tonight is coming from but i'm definitely not a scientist.
what does incomplete dominance say about AA hair?

Echoing what everyone else said, your hair might change with age (mine totally did, but that was when I was younger), but it's quite possible that you have different hair than your dad...in fact, you probably do. But not to worry, your hair is (or will be) awesome in it's own way!
