Did your hair go curly at puberty?

Like Tree3Likes

My hair went crazy curly at puberty. It only had a slight wave before... my father's hair went crazy curly at 20yo.
My hair went curly at puberty too. I only had waves at the ends of my hair before that.
Let's see I might have been curly at birth if I actually had hair. I didn't get hair until I was 2 and when I did finally get hair it was CURLY. But I loved my hair until I turned 24 and got this idea that I should cut all my beautiful blonde curls off and go straight and red. What was I thinking. My hair hasn't been the same since.

I didn't have curls till puberty. When it was humid I would get little curls in the fine, short, wispy hairs around my nape, but the rest was totally straight.

Wurly, fine, thin, moderately to heavily porous. Mod CG.

During my childhood I had poker straight hair. My oldest brother was born with really curly hair like 3b. My middle brother had poker straight hair like mine. When he hit puberty his hair turned curly. Then, right around when I was 13 my head started itching (my brother had the same symptoms) and my hair was starting to get curly. THEN IT JUST KEPT GETTING CURLIER!!!!!!!
AND I AM SOOOOO GLAD THAT HAPPENED! Cause curly hair is absolutely amazing! People pay big bucks to get their hair curly! Everyone of us "naturals" need to be thankful!

By the way, I am growing my hair out----anyone have anything that works or helps this process?
I've been curly since I was born! I've loved my curly hair since I was a little kid.
i didn't realize people's hair could get curly during puberty! that's really cool.

i was born with really curly ringlets. during my childhood my hair was more poofy than curly, but now that i'm 15 it's gotten a lot curlier, but i love it!!

My baby pics show straight hair. I got a little wave on rainy days with layers by 5th grade. But it was really only wavy until about age 35. Over several years my stylist noticed it getting curlier. Around age 42 I got serious about trying to enhance the curl. Finally I learned not to brush it and how to style it and what products to use. But still people come up to me and say, "when did you turn curly? Is that natural?"
I had nice little ringlets when I was a toddler, hair got progressively thicker but remained just 'wavy'. It was shoulder length around age 10, and then I impulsively told my mom just before getting a light trim, that I wanted to have 'short hair'. She and the hairstylist tried to talk me out of getting it really short, but I won out, they chopped it super short and that's when I got 'fro head'. It kinked up really tight and it took me, literally, years to recover. By then, puberty had hit, I let it grow, but the kink remained.

The crazy thing is, both times I've been pregnant, my hair got more relaxed, nice, soft curls. LOVED them! After babies were born, back to tighter frizzies! Oh well, NC.com has really helped me handle them much better now!

  • Biotera Moisturizing Conditioner
  • Kiehls Leave In
  • CK
  • Biotera Gel
My hair was curly and blonde up until kindregarten when it went totally straight and darker. It was straight from kindergarten up to 6 grade. Between 6 and 7 grade (summer of 2001) my hair became wavy again. I sometimes miss my straight hair period though. Maybe because my wavy hair is hard to get styled unlike curly and straight hair types.

I had beautiful 2B curls until puberty. It was like I woke up one day and the individual hairs at my hairline were growing in the shape of a "Z"! The rest of my curls got tighter until I was a terrified and frustrated 3b/c! I spent the rest of my years (until last year) fighting every curl tooth and nail. Mixed race heritage trying to fit into small Midwestern white town...

I am happy now, to not be fighting so hard...

Sort of... Mine started curling a little before puberty. I used to have long 2A hair and around 7 or 8 years old it started to "frizz."

When I was 8 or 9 I started getting perms to try to "make my hair curly" instead of frizzy. Then it wouldn't "go away" and I thought the perms had made my hair curly, so I started to get straighteners. That kept going for a few years until my hair was so damaged the the top of my hair broke off. (Not as bad looking as it sounds. I was able to hide it.)

Eventually, I accepted my hair and realized it was probably naturally curly and the timing of the perms was a coincidence. Now I love my 3c curls!

On a side note: The very bottom layer of my hair (near the nape of my neck) is still 2A except the ends, which are 3c. Weird....
I have 3c hair that I haven't straightened in over 5 years. It's just past shoulder length when dry, and almost waist length when pulled straight.

05/12/09 Still CG. Cowashing with VO5 Lavender Luster. I then condition with Giovanni Smooth as Silk. Styling with VO5 Lavender Luster conditioner with my wide-toothed comb.

I was going to ask if anyone else had this condition. The hair right above the nape of my neck is still very straight, but the hair on top is very curly. It is kind of hard to style this way because half of my head wants to do one thing and the other half wants to do another thing.

Luckily, it's at the very bottom layer, and I have a whole bunch of hair that covers it. It is kind of weird when I wear my hair up and you see it though. It's really super healthy and shiny so it kind of stands out against the tighter curls that are a little less shiny.

My dad got curly hair at puberty. However, when he had it (1970's) it was the in 'do. My sister and I seemed to get our curly hair from him, though my sister was born with hers and mine showed up at puberty. Honestly, everything about me changed when I hit puberty (well, it hit me really...smacked the he!! out of me)...I went from straight to curly, stick thin to chubby, small chested to large chested (in about two weeks mind you), and no hips to large hips. *Sigh* Life.

Yup! My hair was blond and straight until I was around 5. Then it went darker. By the time I was about 14 my hair was brown and had these annoying curly bits at the back by my neck. It just got more and more and I started to straighten, doing a bad job! I wore it curly from 17 onwards.
UK curly going CG from 7th May 09.

I didn't get curls until I was about 25. At the time it started with some waves in the crown area and progressed from there.

I had a slight wave to my hair during childhood, then around the time I was 13, my hair began to get curly. Only I didn't realize it and I kept brushing it (gasp!) the way I always had, cursing my "frizzy" hair. Oh, if only I knew then what I know now . . .

Yep!

I was straight up bald until I was 2. People used to ask my mom what was wrong with me (I also had saucer eyes and a square head so...). But then my hair grew in super blond and wavy.

By the time I was in kindergarten, it was more of a dishwater blond and my parents decided that I should always have some sort of dorky short hair cut so I had no idea what kind of texture I had.

4th grade, I let my hair grow out and it was really wavy and frizzy. But then again, I was brushing it all day long so it could have been curly and I never would have known.

5th grade my hair was disgusting. 3c curls getting brushed out every day. I didn't even know my hair was curly. I just thought I had horrible hair. My dad made me get a spiral perm to "train" my hair. But no one ever said to stop using a brush on my curls.

6th grade I finally figured it out on my own- never brush my curls and conditioner works great as a styler. And voila! 3b/c curls!
