I went to one hairdresser and she said up to 175 a day is normal. It makes me so nervous when I wash and comb because it seems like so much!! I know it's because I don't wash and comb everyday that it seems like so much is coming out.

That sounds about right. I think that about 100 is average.

I have no idea where mine are all going. When I comb and detangle, I lose 0-3 since going pretty much CG.

When I used to brush, it was completely packed full after a week. After a couple months I could have built myself a whole new head.
Yeah they say 100 is normal.
Now if we're talking what comes out in the shower. I know I'm using something my hair hates if I get 20 hairs or so.
Normally I only lose 5 or so in the shower but I'm sure I shed some out during the day.

My hair shed varies, but I lose between 20 - 80 a day.

When I wash/co my hair, I run my fingers through my hair and catch each shed hair and stick it to the ledge in my shower.(I count those lol) I also brush in the shower and lose more then. So about 10-30 when washing & then 10-50 more when I brush depending on how many days it's been in between and how detangling my conditioner is.

I find I lose A LOT more hair if my conditioner isn't very detangling because instead of the tangles being unknotted, it seems like the entire bunch of hair will just get pulled out. So I need detangling co's(which for me equals cones) and I have to use a brush because combs just pull my hair out.

Sometimes it looks really crazy and disgusting with the big pile of hair that I lose, but I've lost a lot of hair as long as I can remember and I'm not bald yet.
When I was co-washing I was losing what I felt like was an extreme amount for me. It definitely started to feel thinner after a while. I switched to Jessicurl HCC and it seems back to normal.

I seriously feel like I should be bald for as much hair as I lose. I feel like I pull out handful after handful of hair. Every once in a while I get freaked out by how much is coming out! This also has to do with the fact that I don't wash my hair everyday... but I also pull out a crap-ton on the days I don't wash. I can run my hand over my hair like I am putting it in a ponytail and pull out probably 10 hairs.

I notice my shedding also has alot to do with the weather. Depending on the climate, I will shed more or less.

I think I am on the high end of hair-shedding. I could easily clog my shower drain in a week

When I skip a day of detangling, I always lose gobs the next time I condition. For some reason I also lose a lot more hair on the days I co-wash. I couldn't quantify how much I lose on a normal day, but it doesn't seem like an alarming amount. I used to loose a lot more hair back when I was shampooing daily, even back when I still combed/brushed.

I've heard anywhere from 50-200 hairs per day. I lose much less hair than I used to when I was shampooing and I think my health is better so I'm not losing as much hair anymore, but I used to clog the drain in one shower. Now, it takes me a while to fill it up. Is it horrible that I wait for it to fill up before cleaning it off? Ew.

This area is under construction as my hair type changed and nothing works well for me. I shampoo, I condition and pretty much have done nothing but chuck my hair in a messy bun for the past oh...year? Yeah, I'm that lazy.

No...going no-poo or CG does not work for me. It leaves me overconditioned and oily in a second no matter what I use, so that's not what's not working.
For a long time, conventional wisdom said 100 hairs a day was about normal. However, Milady - the #1 cosmetology educational provider and the source on which most state boards are based - has recently come out and said 30-40 hairs per day is closer to average.

When I look at photos of my hair, I don't think it's got anywhere near the volume it used to have. In the past I'd be warned by hairdressers to book a longer appointment time in the future to give them time to get through it all. I can't see them doing that now. Whenever I ask family members if they think I'm losing hair they all say no, so I don't know what to think. Maybe it just looked thicker before because it was drier and I used to blow dry it.

I haven't counted the no. of hairs in the drain each day - they're so tangled up it'd be hard to do.
I can't co wash, I lose a lot of hair if I do that. I have to have at least a sulfate free shampoo.
I scrub my scalp and never see anything on it but I think it just smothers my scalp.

I lost sooooo much hair trying cg. My scalp doesn't like anything creamy on it, not even creamy moisturizing shampoos. I have to use clear shampoos.

P.S. If anyone has serious hair loss that is scaring them, they should really go to a doctor and get some blood work done. I know that at least some of my excessive shedding has been from iron deficient anemia and it is slowing down since I've been taking my iron how I'm supposed to.
your hair loss sounds similar to mine! every time I even run my hand over my hair i lose at least a hair or two. and when i do the math, i figure with this kind of hair loss i must be slowly balding!
My biggest concern is how much hair there is on the pillow in the morning. I usually find about 20-30 hairs on the pillow, then lose a chunk in the shower and probably about 50-60 more through out the day.
I have recently moved to Japan and i think it's gotten worse here. is climate or location a fctor in hair loss? or maybe something dietary that im not getting here?
Thanks!

made up of 98.822% silliness!!

I lately have been losing a lot of hair, but again I've been doing some tough rubbing of the scalp, not with nails, but trying to get rid of build up and as I'm washing (either with water or low-poo) my hands consistently come out of my hair with hair on my hands. And then with conditioner, some more, and then scrunching and raking in products, more. I don't know what it could be. I had bad shedding before, but got it to lessen when I was using rosemary in my conditioner (but that made my scalp itch) so now I don't know what it could be. Anyone know how to do low-manipulation with washing your scalp?? I do get 100-150 per day. Now with someone saying only 40 daily is average, I'm freaked out. And if some of it is breakage, some of it has to be, what should I do about that?

I too have resorted to obsessively counting the number of hairs that come out in the shower while feeling a breathless paranoia that I'm going bald . An average number is difficult to determine because there are a lot of factors to consider.

1. Density of the hair on your scalp: You want to take into account how many hairs you have per square inch. More overall strands on your head means more will be shed on a daily basis.

2. How your hair is styled: If you keep your hair up, braided or carefully curled and never touch it, you're going to see more hairs shed in the shower. If your hair is more loosely styled, the shed hairs will fall out throughout the day, leaving less for you to notice coming out in the shower.

3. How often you wash/rinse/co-wash: If you manipulate your hair very little, and wash infrequently, you'll see more hairs in the shower, again because they're not falling out throughout the day(s). If you manipulate your hair more or wash more frequently then you'll see less hair shed in the shower.

4. Your age: In all honesty, as you get older your hair just starts to thin. The rate will depend on genetics, diet, circulation etc. But you'll almost always have thinner overall hair in your mid-thirties and beyond than you did in your teens and twenties. Oh, and smoking will definitely cause thinner hair (it affects circulation).

5. Your health: I agree completely that you should see a doctor if you're experiencing out of the ordinary shedding or anything that is a major change from normal. Your diet and level of exercise will also have a big impact on your hair and scalp health. Anything that promotes good nutrition and good circulation will help with hair condition, thickness and growth.

6. The season/weather: Changes in the season or weather can affect hair growth and shedding. Generally, warmer weather stimulates hair growth, however this can be very different for each individual. Personally, I tend to shed a lot more around the autumn and much less in the summer.

7. Length of your hair: I got really paranoid when my hair started to get longer in length. I was used to having short or shoulder length hair for years. As it gets closer to my waist, the amount of hair that comes out in the shower comes close to giving me a heart attack! Then came the obsessive-compulsive counting of the hairs incident At that point, I realized I was an idiot and it looked like I was shedding twice the amount of hair because my hair was twice as long as what I was used to for so many years

Generally, normal or average shedding is going to be what's normal or average for you. If you, like me, have latent OCD tendencies by all means count your hairs shed every day to come up with your normal or average. But in general, if you don't see a huge difference and your hair behaves the same as it always did, then the hairzilla in your shower is normal. Just name it and refer to it as a pet
I appreciate the big article. I get scared just because I've been through hair loss befoer and now am on spirolactone for PCOS, what's crazy is I dont' know if high amount is normal for me because that's how it was before I went tto docs and stuff. Then I was using a conditioenr with -cones and rosemary that my husband would cook and add, but it made me itch too bad. but during those months, I was losing like half of right now. Now again I wash daily, and due to my counting (i admit it) I can tell you I lose that much daily 150. So the fact that I wash daily, I should see less according to what you're saying and I get that daily. Sometimes closer to 100, but between those numbers daily. I'm 31 so I don't know if I'm in the area to be thinning due to age. My density, according to FIA, it is normal density, right on the border of thick. But I see it less dense that when I was 20.

I also have a lot of hair showing up in the shower. It reminds me of the amount which came out after I had my son. I have very thick hair, as you can see in photo, and am 47 yrs old. I may talk to my doctor about it at my next appt.

I do have a few thinning spots, but I think they are from wearing my hair pulled back or from pulling out the grays (I am thinking of coloring to stop this).

Before I went CG, I used to lose so much hair that the hair ball oversized the drain hole in my bathtub. Sounds gross, but that's true.

About 100 hairs are pretty normal, but if you see bald patches in your hair, please contact your doctor to see if there is underlying medical problem for this. I have this problem and people always give me negative comments about it. It is emotionally damaging my self-esteem.

So when you comb or detangle your hair and you see hairs in your had, don't freak out. It is normal and happens to everyone.
But you have so much hair. Look at me, I'm way less dense and I used to be the girl who had poofball hair and thick hair. So I've gone way downhill. What kills me is that I don't see like thinning/bald on my head (thank God) but you can see through my curls, like it's just very few of them and it is not dense there like a forest, like yours. And I don't have the poof I used to have!
