We have a lot of newbies, so I thought I'd bump this thread up--again! We have lots of discussions whether it's product of technique and I say both.

When I was posting pictures in my fotki the other day, I noticed that my hair isn't as curly as I think it is. While the curl starts in the same place at the roots, the front pieces are tighter. Because of the inverted bob, I pay special attention to those front pieces--or else they hang and I loose the "line." (it's apparent when I don't do a good job in a lot of my fotki pictures.)

Some of us think we have a better side--I wonder if it's because of technique? My right side is better, I'm right handed and part on the left.

I was kind of skeptical about it, but it worked! My hair is definitely curlier and I got some pretty good clumps.

I did my normal routine with No Poo and OneC, which I don't rinse out all the way, so it makes that squinchy sound when I scrunch and it's still dripping and I add Angell.

But here's what I do. I coat my hands with the gel and then scrunch, but each palmful of hair that I cup, I squeeze and pump eight times for each section.

As long as I can hear that sound and it feels squishy when I pump my hand open and closed, I know it's working.

When I take my hand away, I'm left with a really soft-looking clump!

I did this all over my head to apply the gel and diffused and got gorgeous clumps!

I really find that the pumping helps distribute the product really, really well-especially for my super-dense hair.

Does anyone else do this??
I'm sorry, I'm new... what do you mean by "clumps"?

I love this technique! I feel it helps to distribute everything better than simply scrunching

I realize that this post is old. But, I found kathymack's comments here interesting. I am left-handed and my part is also on my left. But, my "good side" tends to change based on how well the curls are forming on each side. I wonder - does everyone else actually have one good side and one bad side? Or does yours change like mine?

...On the subject of the original post in this thread, I don't really understand what this "pumping" is. (Okay, why do I want to LOL when I type that???... )

I combined this with my current super-soaker method (which doesn't want you to "pump" your hair - sorry I have to LOL here sounds so dirty!) and my hair looked no different then usual. But it held better (I'm putting my hair in and taking it out of a very loose ponytail about 7 times a day) so I will probably do this in future.

And I don't have a good side (left or right). But I'm pretty much ambidextrous, too (haven't master writing yet, but that's because I don't write as much lefty)... so I'm probably no help to that question. :P

I've used this method for I don't know how long... probably when I first saw this thread a couple of years ago. I don't think it leads to clumps for me (though I don't have that problem to begin with), but it definitely helps in distributing product. I'm pretty OCD about doing it at least eight times too

My right side is definitely better than my left side, but I don't think it's because of technique persay. I think it's because I part on my left, so there's more hair to clump (which my hair likes to do). I'm also right-handed, but I scrunch product in with both hands.

For me, it's like scrunching, but instead of opening your palm like you would if you just scrunched once, you don't... just make a fist and squeeze a few times. Lol!

I'm a scrunch-n-pumper, too. I like it because I feel like it distributes product better... Or at least makes me feel like it does. Ha!

As far as having a better side, mine is the left. I always thought it was because I usually sleep on my right, but now I wonder if it because I wear my part on that side. I think my part will go either way so I'm gonna try switching sides.

Oh my... First I'm pumping and now I'm switching sides!

So I did my part on the other side today and it looks more even. Interesting! I am also having an exceptionally good curl day so that might have something to do with it but I think I will keep doing my part on the left for a while.

Somehow I've missed this technique. I'm always looking for new ways to get my crown to clump nicely, so this may do it. I do a lot of scrunching already, but I don't believe I've ever 'pumped' before. ('Pumping' being opening and closing your hand, I would assume?)

Gonna try this in the morning and see what it's like. Thanks!

Yup pumping would be doing a scrunch and then keeping it but opening & closing your hand, that's the way I do it anyway. It distributes product a lot better I think.

Parts & better sides:

My "better" side varies but my part is almost always on the right (right handed). I've been thinking about changing it up to see what happens. I used to part down the middle and the left side at the front-top was usually flatter than the right.

LOL I always called this squooshing. Scrunching it in but trying not to scrunch out all the water and then gently squeezing it, squish squish squish, before letting go, to move the product around in the hair. It does help a lot.

This doesn't give me any more clumps (my hair is very clumpy by nature) but it does make my curls tighter! It's so fun. I normally gently scrunch my hair as to not disturb the curl pattern, but recently I have been going all out with the pumping/squishing/aggressive scrunching. It gives me more root volume too.
