Is my hair supposed to be crunchy?

OK, this may seem like a silly question to some, but I literally just started wearing my hair curly. I bought Biotera gel and was so excited because it doesn't have a strong, chemical-y smell. Unfortunately, it made my hair clumpy and crunchy.

My routine was I co-washed (Suave), then conditioned w/ the same co., and then just used the gel. I guess I'm not really sure if I'm applying the gel correctly - I plopped my hair dry and then put the gel in "accordian-style", but I can't figure out if I used too much, too little, or if it's just not right.

Or if I should use a creme in addition? My curls were not uniform at all and my hair looked like a bird's nest by the end of the day.

Any suggestions?

silly question maybe, but did you scrunch out the crunch after your hair was completely dry?

If it looked like a bird's nest at the end of the day, you may want to add a creme. Mine was the same way until I added one, and now the ringlets stay defined a lot longer.

And yes, gently scrunch out the crunch, but only after it is totally dry. Or leave the crunch in, if you don't mind it.

LOL don't worry, i didn't know what to do when i first started CG either
this is how i do it, after washing, conditioning and putting leave in into my hair, i add gel (you can either rake it through with your fingers or scrunch it in) then i diffuse till my hair is about 80% dry. i let my hair airdry without touching (this is very important, if you do touch during the drying process, it's likely it'll cause frizz). after my hair is completely dry, my hair is stiff and crunchy because of the gel. i then bend over with all of my hair flipped forward and gently scrunch out the crunch, wich leaves my hair soft and styled

here's a video by JessiCurl, so you can see how she does it: http://www.jessicurl.com/Demo-Videos-p-6.html

click on the one called "scrunch out the crunch" and you'll see.

Thanks for the tips! See, this is why I need a website like this. I never thought about scrunching out the crunch. This must be why so many curly girls have soft-looking, styled hair instead of crunchy, styled hair. So yay - maybe the gel will work, after all.

I was trying to minimize the amount of products I use (mainly because right now, my scalp and hair seem really prone to buildup), but I don't think it'll hurt to try the creme.

You can try the Bioterra curl creme under it. It's incredible. Leaves your hair in ringlets, soft and moist. You still need to scrunch--but it's not hard.

I use a cream and a gel together. My hair is a bit crunchy the first day so I try to cowash on a day I don't have to be anywhere. I sleep on it and it's great the next day.
