Inverted bob? On curly hair? Opinions, please...

I am in desperate need of a haircut. My last one was back in September, and what I'd gotten was a layered, rounded bob. It looked good at the time, but now it's grown out and my hair is looking pretty lifeless and frizzy. A haircut and going no-poo is my plan for the moment. I made my appointment today (for Friday morning), and I'm thinking of going for a cut that looks like this:

Partly because I just don't think I want the exact same haircut again.

But I have insanely curly (we're talking spring-coil curls) hair that, right now, looks like this:

(That's right out of the bath, after shampooing, and about an hour or so before somebody pointed me to this site.)

I'm just not sure how that inverted bob cut is going to work on my hair. Usually when I ask for something that looks great on straight-haired people, it ends up looking atrocious on me. But I've had a lot of comments from other online friends saying that an inverted bob would work just fine. Some of them have curly hair, some don't. So I figured I'd ask here, where people actually understand my dilemma.

Also, if anybody has any alternate suggestions, I'm open. I really like the look of the inverted bob, but I'm not against considering another option. I've been searching for some other curly hairstyles online and the only ones I've been able to come up with are ones that are either a) from the 80's; or b) actually straight-haired people that have had their hair in rollers or curled some other way. Frustrating!!!

I have an inverted bob cut. I really like it. I would love for it to be a bit closer to the angle in the straight haired picture, but so far that just hasn't worked for how my hair lays. This is what I have (if the link works)

My hair is currently a little longer than it is in this picture because I am trying to grow it out some. Still an inverted bob but longer. I am trying to get to the point that the angle starts at the base of my neck and the front part would be almost touching my shoulders (if that makes sense)

Yes! That's EXACTLY what I would LOVE my hair to look like. (My hair has way too much frizz right now, but that's the whole point of attempting the no poo.) But that picture is precisely what I was imagining... I just wasn't sure if what I was imagining was what was actually going to happen.

I actually didn't think I could do it either. My previous stylist years ago had said she didn't think it would work unless I wanted to grow my bangs all the way out so the front would be really long. I changed stylists and in our first consultation she suggested that cut for me. I didn't even mention it, I was just waiting to see what her recommendation would be (at that time I had shoulder length hair that was massive but would look stringy on the ends). So I let her do it. It's awesome and I did not have to give up the bangs, we just reshaped them to better blend with the cut. I have had this cut at least 2 years plus now (hence the growing out a little just to change it up some). I also changed hair products and that has made a huge difference too.

I have heard it referred to as a stacked, angled or inverted bob. The key is to get a good stylist who will factor in your curl shrinkage and get you the right kind of stacking in the back so you get a nice angle. For me, we razor just a tiny bit under some of the layers in the back to help it stand up. I know lots don't like the razoring thing but it really helps me because the back section will get really weighed down and lay really flat if we don't. That only gets done every so many appointments, not every time though. Other than that, we have just been tweaking it here and there as it is growing out to accomodate the way it lays so I don't get overwhelmed (my hair can get really huge).

I know several other curlies on here have or have had the inverted bob in varying styles. I think it's a good look

rednaturalcurls-i have to say that cut really looks great on you. The length is perfect for that style and your curls just fall so nicely that it works. I honestly never thought that cut could look good on a curly because I've seen it look awful one too many times. In fact, my stylist kept cutting my hair with a slight inversion and it just drove me nuts. On me it just looked messy. I've seen 2 other curlies, and I'll admit their hair was not as healthy or uniformally curly as yours, but it just looked goofy. Had you not posted I would have advised "NO WAY!" but now I have mixed feelings.
I love angled bobs! My hair is similar to the one in the picture, not quite as angled. I'd love it if my curls were tighter--I think it would look really good. I think rednaturalcurls' bob looks fabulous.

It's just over 12 hours to my hair appointment, and I just wanted to bump this in case anybody else had any input for me.

I love that hair picture that was posted! Mine is a bit longer and has grown out since I had it cut so it's not as defined. It's also not as curly.

The front of my hair curls up more than the back of my hair so the angle is not as noticeable. When I get it cut again I'm going to have the back cut shorter than it was last time.
I think an inverted bob looks good on nearly everyone, curly or straight. Go for it!
As has been said tho, be sure your stylist takes into consideration the shrink factor of curly hair!!

i have an inverted bob. i used to wear it super straight and i got tons of compliments on it every day. now that i've gone curly, i still like it, but i think i'm going to grow it out. you can see pics in my fotki.
rednaturalcurls, great haircut! Do you have a picture of the back of your hair that you could post? Who is your hairstylist? She did a great job.
Kitara, your hair looks beautiful! I can kind of see what you mean about it not looking as inverted as it's "supposed" to, though.

jeepcurlygurl
, I don't think the shrinkage factor is going to be a problem. When I made my appointment, I was given a choice between a cut and blow-dry or a dry cut. A dry cut?! Hell yeah!

, I love your hair - straight OR curly!

I'm starting to get a little nervous, but I think that's mainly because I've never gone to this hairdresser before. I did take my 11-year old to her back in September, though. She did a pretty good job with HER hair (and she's a curly girl, too!), so I SHOULD be okay. Hubby doesn't really want me to cut it short, but he's always liked longer hair on me anyway. But he's not the one that's got to get up and take care of the hair in the morning as well as getting 4 girls up, dressed, and off to school. I'd love to be able to spend an hour just doing my hair but it ain't.gonna.happen!!! So that's part of my wanting to go with the inverted bob - less hair, less work (okay, not a LOT less, but at this point I'll take all I can GET!).

On the flip side, though, I'm a little excited about trying all the new tips and techniques I've been reading about on here. Good hair days, here I come... I hope!

NOOOOOOO! At least not for me. When my hair gets too short it looks ridiculous.
