How to get volume at your roots?

Hey it's me again... and I just wanted to see how I can get my roots to have more lift. I tried everything... scrunching, styling my hair upside down and I don't want to use the blow dryer. I have been looking at a product called Garnier Fructis Body & Volume Root Lifting Treatment Spray, and Garnier has worked for me in the past. What do you guys think, any other suggestions that are available at pharmacies/grocery stores for cheap?

: Suave Naturals conditioners, LA Looks Curl/Sport Gel, still looking for a good deep conditioner that i can buy locally (CVS/Walmart/Target,etc). Suggestions? =)

I like to mix Suave coconut cond. with my gel and scrunch them both in, after using Suave Aloe and Waterlily to co-wash and condition. I detangle it in the shower with a wide-toothed comb. & when hair is dry, if crunchy, scrunch once again.

CG since Aug. 2, 2008!

Buy some duckbill clips and clip the roots for volume. If you search this site, you'll find a few threads about clipping methods. Good luck. I still can't get the clipping thing right.
Check out the plunking video on the site and this link:

In case you never figured out clipping,
Currently, using JC HCC, Too Shea, CK and CCSS, RR or LOOB or MOP-C.
CK is the one!!

as of 6/17/10 - I have to add Joico!

I swear by Matrix Amplify root lifter. I think its CG but if its not I don't care. It hasn't built up on me yet.

I have fine wavy, layered hair with bangs and this is the only thing that works for me. I've tried clipping but my hair always looks poofy when I do this and it eventually flattens out anyway.

Matrix is the only root lifter I have ever tried, so I can't compare it to Garnier but I'd give it a try.

Good luck.

I wash my hair at night. After my hair is mostly dry and my roots are damp, I pineapple and go to sleep. In the morning, my hair is voluminous.
There's a really simple method, and I'm sorry I didn't think of it years ago!
Simply use your finger to gently flip your hair onto the opposite side to where you normally part it. Air dry or diffuse like that, then flip it back!
It looks really good. Have a try!
naturecat likes this.
When your hair is dry, flip your head upside down, stick your fingers in your hair by the root on the underside, and fluff. This is the only method I have found that works for me without diffusing my hair upside down. Don't go crazy with the fluffing, be gentle and do small movements.

I've been using Curly Hair Solutions RevUp! volumizing shampoo and mist for the last month. I've been getting really great volume from day one and when I pineapple at night, I get mega volume in the morning that settles a bit before I leave the house but I've gone almost a whole week, w/o having to try to generate more volume. I'm really loving these two products.

I think plopping or root clips work best for volume (though I don't tend to do either lol).

I'm with Amy; flip your hair upside down when it's dry and fluff. I do this every time I wash my hair (and sometimes I'll do it a couple of times during the day). Works a treat!

3A with some 3B thrown in. Medium porosity. High density. Low-medium thickness.

Aiming for WL curls (eventually)
I find clipping difficult also. Here's one tip that helps me with that: I wait to clip until my hair is partially dry because otherwise the clips slide right out when the hair is wet. When it is somewhat dry, each strand has increased volume and the clips stay in better. It's not a perfect solution but definitely improves my clipping. Good luck!

I tried rinsing my hair upside down, but it just made my crown SUPER flat. It looked like I had no hair back there!

Plopping works really well for me in terms of volume. I also use a pick on my roots when my hair is almost dry, and that gives me more volume without the frizz that using my fingers would have given me.
