Have you ever cut your hair yourself?

I'm only 15, so I can't really get an expensive haircut. The salon my mom and I usually go to is not very experienced with curly hair...The last time I went there I got her to cut my hair dry, but then afterwords she got it wet and blowdryed it, etc. and the haircut didn't come out well. Anyway, now that my hair is getting longer, it's getting a tad less curly and a LOT more frizzy. I want layers to enhance the curl, because my hair is extremely thick and the layers underneath peak under the top layer and are usually wavy at best (2b/2c), while the top layer is curly (around 3a). I read somewhere that you can flip your hair in front of your head and cut it one length, and then when you flip it back, you have layers...if that makes sense. Any advice or anyone who has tried this? I can possible go to another salon, that may or may not be curl friendly... but I don't know if I want to risk it...Thank you so much, and sorry for the novel...
I have been cutting my own hair for 15 years. I've never done layers though so no advice on that.

What I do is when my hair is wet, part it down the middle, comb it straight, then while keeping my head straight run my hair between my fingers until I get to the end and snip, repeat on other side, make sure it's even. My curl's spring factor is very inconsistent from day to day, so I don't really worry too much about it being a little uneven. If it is uneven one day, the next it will probably be perfect.
