Give me frizz I tells ya!

I was having the worst hair days and I actually posted a message last week about it.

I love hair like Shakira's and I can pull it off, usually, with my own hair. However, when I was doing CG it became flat and the curls were well defined but I lost almost all my body! Oh and my hair hated the magnesium sulfate I was bombarding it with (I've returned the products).

This week, I've done some experiencing and I think I found my own personal method, which is CG-Mod, to get my volume back (and then some!).

I'm using TJ's Tingle shampoo and conditioner. I'm shampooing every other day. I rinse out the condish and actually wrap my hair in a turbin (like you're not supposed to do!) rather than blotting (as per CG). After doing various other things I shake my partially dry hair out, apply a pea size of TJ's condish, actually comb it through with a wide-tooth comb, define my part and THEN scrunch in some gel (Giovanni's LA one). Not too much. Then I diffuse while scrunching with my hands and voila! Big, well defined, curls with just enough frizz.

My hair did not like me applying product when dripping wet. It didn't like being blotted and it likes to be combed through with a little condish prior to scrunching in product!

Natural but not quite CG and I have my big hair back!!!

Sorry to necromance this thread, but this is exactly what I've been thinking about lately. My curls are so much more defined since doing CG, and I think my hair's healthier, but I really miss the volume and slight frizz. I want wild hair!

Is there a mousse that gives good curl hold AND volume? The LALSG I'm using gives good hold, but I get zero volume.
Hah. I got tired of close-to-the head hair today, and I finger-combed out my clumps. That gave me instant side volume (though crown volume is still eluding me with these natural curls). See the result in this fotki albume of mine http://public.fotki.com/MirCurls/curl-products-and-h/ with the caption that says FINGER-COMBED 2nd day hair. The next pic, I retamed it with some CIAB.

I do love volume, though. I miss 80's hair. hah.

I think my roots like mousse, and my curls like gel.
I ordered Joiwhip last week cause I suspect I will be the same--roots with mousse and curls with gel. I cannot live with a flat crown. Seriously, it's what will make me go un-CG. If I can't get lift-off with CG, then I'll go modified CG. Flat-top is so gross on me.

I'm with you. I can't do a flat top. Maybe we need to start a club or something!
This is exactly the issue that was my lightbulb moment after a couple of years on this site!

After spending a completely vulgar amount of money on all the HGs and product bandwagons on here I came to realize that it wasn't so much that the products everyone else liked didn't agree with my hair, it just didn't give me the style I was looking for...and lots of the products I use and like would be a total waste for others.

I still fall onto the PJ bandwagon but I try to think about not only the characteristics of my hair but how my preferred style might differ from the norm.

I like my hair bigger and more undefined than most and I don't really care about encouraging curl.

I use low poo most days, just a tad of conditioner and no leave in, and then a lot less product than most would use.

I also find that my dry hair likes product more than wet hair and like that forever ago original poster, waxes are my friend (that is what I use the Curliso Unruly Paste for).

I am not alone!

I love hairspray...don't judge
I love volume too, and have found I'd rather have waves and big hair than curly flat hair.

I like Sally's Ion Vitalizing thickener and CCCC lite gives me lots of volume.

I have to use the diffuser, otherwise my hair dries completely flat to my head. Yuk. I'm with MirCurls, I'll dump this whole thing if I have to live with "flat-hair-on-head" syndrome. So far I haven't, but now that my hair is getting longer, its getting harder. Hopefully a haircut will solve that issue.

Ohmigod! I AM NOT ALONE!!!!

I just found this site, what, like 2 months ago (lurked for awhile), looking for a way to bring back my crazy huge curls from the brink of dehydration. While some of the products mentioned have been great, it's really the techniques that made me the most difference for my hair. I pretty much instantly got giant, clumpy ringlets just adapting my non-CG routine to new diffusing, blotting, and product application techniques.

And they were beautiful. And they were novel. And I rocked them proudly all "ooooh! I have bouncy, shiny curls!"

And then I realized I was contemplating buying new clothes because non of my extant wardrobe really looked right with this new civilized head of hair I was sporting for, like, the first time ever.

And *then* I realized that I didn't need new clothes, I just needed to find a happy medium for me and my hair.

I'm getting close with blotting out excess water, using less leave-in, and applying gel (with a slight finger rake, followed by upside down scrunching) once my hair has dried a bit. And then, if diffusing, adding some finger-initiated root shake while I use the diffuser bowl to scrunch. Slowly, we're returning the crazy.
Goobernut, how do you use the CCCC Lite? Do you use it alone, or in conjunction with something else?

I'm going to buy some JoiWhip today, but as a PJ, I'm sure I'll want to try the CCCC, too. :-D Will have to look for the Sally's Ion stuff, too.
I am a volume lover too.

I really like the Elucence Foam instead of the Joiwhip (too drying for my hair).

I also find that the only gel I can use that doesn't reduce volume is Curls Goddess Glaze. I put the Elucence foam on top the of this gel and get root lift (with clipping). CJ Aloe Fix was great for volume too but I am finding that glycerine gives me floofy volume rather than nice controlled volume so I am trying to use products without it.

My CG Journey:

I don't like perfectly defined curls at all! In fact, I like a bit of frizz

One of the things that helps me when my hair is looking to neat and thin is to physically break up the curls. I gently separate big ones into a few smaller curls after my hair has dried.

Edit: I also stopped using gel and now use mousse instead. Gel glues my hair too much.
k, tried Alba Botanicals soft hold styling cream as a base coat, plopped, added Joiwhip. Thought it was going well at first, b/c I got a lot of good curl when diffusing. It looked okay from the front and had a decent amount of volume, but no gel when wet meant no good clumping for me. I SOTC and sprayed, but a few hours later, I had to mess with it. I dampened sections and scrunched in FSG and diffused some more. Clumps came back into play somewhat.

Still want to play with the mousse. Maybe it doesn't like the curl cream with it. Maybe I need to FSG in the shower then add mousse at the roots later. Suggestions?
Wavy -- I had no luck at all with mousse in any form. Just not enough hold. Though I think I'll try it again after I get my hair layered. I use the CCCC lite without a leave in. I scrunch it in, and then use FHG on top. I squish out the extra water with a flour sack towel. I diffuse to about 50% and then scrunch in a tiny bit of FHG in on top. CCCC lite is the only product I use without a leave in.

I also try to avoid glycerin in my stylers -- as it leaves me a little pooufy.

I managed to make it look pretty good last night after a lot more screwing around with it. I had watched the CK video on frizzoff.com, and noticed how he just played with the hair and threw it around a while after finishing. I figured I didn't have anything to lose, so I just threw my hands in there and went to town. I think it actually helped! It got a little crunchy-looking again after I slept in it, but after a little more JC N&S this morning, it looked good, and I got compliments at church.

What I'm liking about this curly hair thing is that even when I have a not-great day, I can just keep experimenting and can usually make it look pretty decent.
