How many of you have tried.....

Ok, now I have another annoying question. When we're talking fine-tooth comb here, I assume we're talking about the rattail combs where there's hardly (or none) any gap between the teeth at all? Boy, that seems like it's going to be really hard to get through all of my hair. I used one a little wider this morning so I'm already probably doing this wrong.

Without conditioners giving me good detangling in the shower (wide tooth comb there!) and a styling product that gives good slip I would NOT consider putting a comb through my hair. So it has to be tangle free already getting out of the shower, smooth over a product like CK over the dripping hair and squish a bit - I use about three globs of good slip giving product. The comb just slides through easily (for me).

As to your earlier question Ms Giblet, I don't do anything in the shower with my head down (just maybe chin down or chin up! LOL). I have tried it but I find I get more tangles doing things from head up and head down and got no advantages from it. My curls were kinda wacky. The only thing I do upside down is lightly swirl/scrunch and diffuse a bit. (I hate when stylists try to detangle my hair upwards in those sinks they have!)

I don't think I have a comb that fine, but I'll have to try this. Funny, I used to use an afro pick to comb product through my hair. I stopped years ago, but I used to get smaller, tighter curls before. Hmmm....gotta see if I still have one laying around.

Here's an old pic, my hair was not even layered and I had tighter curls in there. (Bad products though).

I think I was still using the pick here too. Duh!

I'll be tearing up the house this afternoon looking for a darn pick now!

I'm so used to doing everything upside down, this is going to be quite an adventure for me tomorrow. Better get up early so I have time to play and not be late for work doing it!

OK I just finished trying this. Two problems: 1) We just moved and I can't find the camera cord to dump a photo into my computer and 2) I did a bunch of other "new" stuff so don't know what exactly helped but...

My hair looks really good. I've been having such a hard time lately with it feeling good but looking bad or the other way around.

I did an ACV rinse then added White Rain Citrus something over the top. With my head upright (never have done this, always do everything upside down) combed the condish through with my wide toothed comb. Then rinsed and combed with the rat tail comb. Added KY Silk (don't have CK yet) about a quarter size in my palm and smoothed it over my hair like you would to put it in a pony tail. Combed through with the rat tail comb. Repeated this twice more to make sure it was totally covered. Plopped for only a short time and diffused.
My hair looks really good and feels good too! I can't say I have more clumps, seems normal.

Can't wait to hear what the rest of you think.

For Pete's sake can someone just try this already!!!
Just kidding . I've been reading this entire post and can't wait till someone tries it and reports back. I work tomorrow so I'm too chicken to try it cause when my hair decides it doesn't like something, it REALLY doesn't like it.
On a related note, I do find my curls seem to curl better when my hair doesn't clump as much. They get more ringlety and longer lasting definition when I rake my fingers through and break up the clumps a bit.

ETA: Ok, must have posted at the same time as you Eche. Waiting for pics!

I will have to try this. I used this method when I received the CK, since I think this was JT method. It is suppose to provide better clumping and also take out the stray hairs, so you have less snarling. It is suppose to make the hair lay better and distribute product better. I will rattle around the rubbermaid tub and try to find my metal rat tail comb. It must be 40 years old by now. I guess all old things come back...or something like that.
Well here's a photo but I don't think it shows much. I don't have one from before to compare it to, just pre CG.

Ok - I tried this routine this am. I have a rattail comb but I would not call it really fine toothed but that is what I used.

I applied SheaM on really wet hair then once out of the shower I applied CK. Then I took the comb and put a section of hair through it - while I was running the comb down my hair I put four fingers in behind the comb and separated into 4 'clumps' (I dont have a lot of hair so clumps is kinda a lie). When I reach the end with my fingers I kinda scrunched it. Then I moved on the next section. There was no 'throwing' back on my head of hair I just moved on the next area.

Once I was done I did a bit of scrunching up with some more CK on the ends.

Then I mixed some BRHG with GF curl shaping spray gel (I sprayed this on the BRHG in my palm and then rubbed together). I did it upright at first and then briefly upside down. I then scrunched with my curlease towel all upright. I diffused for probably 10 minutes tops and now I am letting it airdry. So far it looks ok but after my last 2 days - anything would look good. I will update once dry.

Did it! pictures on my fotki - I think next time I'll have to use more gel - as I think I'm headed for frizz. I think it's something that you have to get used it - not bad though..............waiting Misgiblet!!!

OK! OK!, I did it!! I think I'm going to like this, but I will probably have to make a few adjustments. The hardest part of this to deal with was doing everything upright - I'm not used to that. So, I used a little KCKT as a leave-in, stood back under the shower for a couple of seconds just to make sure it was distributed well and was very wet, then got out of the shower and put the first puddle of CK through my hair as if putting my hair in a ponytail. I started out trying to do it in sections while combing and adding CK as I did each section and decided the he!! with that and just started combing it a lot - upwards, outwards, you name it. Then I scrunched in a little gel while leaning over to each side, then turned upside down and swung my head back & forth a few times to get more separation and plopped very loosely for about 5 minutes. I then started diffusing upside down and I could already tell how much better my hair was covered with product because sometimes after diffusing for just a couple of minutes I start feeling some dry spots , which is why I've been having to finish up my diffusing with the hot sock to avoid any air flow at all so I don't end up with frizz. Anyway, didn't have to do that this time because the CK was so well distributed.

One thing for me is my hair is VERY thick at the top of my head and this is why I have always rinsed my hair upside down -- my hair always feels so plastered down on top when I rinse upright. I had to really work the fine-tooth comb through that area when applying the CK. I think I might have to use a wider-tooth comb just at the beginning right before applying the CK and then switch to the fine-tooth comb. I don't think that should really make that much difference.

My only other complaint is my hair is flatter on top and I didn't get as much root curl. I think I'll just need to do more clipping and do it earlier than I normally do.

Notty, I took a couple pics this morning while it was still drying, but I had to leave for work so didn't have time to load them. My hair is still drying now, so not sure what the final results are yet. I'll try to take some more pics when I get home tonight and will post them as soon as I can. This job really interferes with my life, ya know?

I also think I need to add a little more gel, especially near the top, but I was afraid it might get too producty after all the CK. I'll try that next time. But I think with a few adjustments and more practice, I'm going to like this method. My hair is definitely not as messy looking. I'll give it another week and see how it does.

I sometimes do my hair like this, with a rat tail comb. It's very time consuming but I like the results. It's basically how they taught me to do it at Ouidad a hundred years ago when I went there. Back then this method gave me super curly clumpy hair, but now, since my hair is much, much longer, it gives me defined curly waves with less frizz. I can also get pretty good height at the roots because I use long duckbill clips to clip the roots. I'm usually too lazy to do it though, so I just use a wide tooth comb or an pick to distribute product. It comes out flatter on top when I do it that way, since I'm not sectioning the hair and placing it properly.

wow everyone's hair looks great! my only concern is doing it upright. i don't get good volume when i put my product in upright and i lose curl at the top. still i plan on getting a fine tooth comb and trying this out on sunday and will post pics on sunday night. i'm excited!
