Did it! pictures on my fotki - I think next time I'll have to use more gel - as I think I'm headed for frizz. I think it's something that you have to get used it - not bad though..............waiting Misgiblet!!!

OK! OK!, I did it!! I think I'm going to like this, but I will probably have to make a few adjustments. The hardest part of this to deal with was doing everything upright - I'm not used to that. So, I used a little KCKT as a leave-in, stood back under the shower for a couple of seconds just to make sure it was distributed well and was very wet, then got out of the shower and put the first puddle of CK through my hair as if putting my hair in a ponytail. I started out trying to do it in sections while combing and adding CK as I did each section and decided the he!! with that and just started combing it a lot - upwards, outwards, you name it. Then I scrunched in a little gel while leaning over to each side, then turned upside down and swung my head back & forth a few times to get more separation and plopped very loosely for about 5 minutes. I then started diffusing upside down and I could already tell how much better my hair was covered with product because sometimes after diffusing for just a couple of minutes I start feeling some dry spots , which is why I've been having to finish up my diffusing with the hot sock to avoid any air flow at all so I don't end up with frizz. Anyway, didn't have to do that this time because the CK was so well distributed.

One thing for me is my hair is VERY thick at the top of my head and this is why I have always rinsed my hair upside down -- my hair always feels so plastered down on top when I rinse upright. I had to really work the fine-tooth comb through that area when applying the CK. I think I might have to use a wider-tooth comb just at the beginning right before applying the CK and then switch to the fine-tooth comb. I don't think that should really make that much difference.

My only other complaint is my hair is flatter on top and I didn't get as much root curl. I think I'll just need to do more clipping and do it earlier than I normally do.

Notty, I took a couple pics this morning while it was still drying, but I had to leave for work so didn't have time to load them. My hair is still drying now, so not sure what the final results are yet. I'll try to take some more pics when I get home tonight and will post them as soon as I can. This job really interferes with my life, ya know?

I also think I need to add a little more gel, especially near the top, but I was afraid it might get too producty after all the CK. I'll try that next time. But I think with a few adjustments and more practice, I'm going to like this method. My hair is definitely not as messy looking. I'll give it another week and see how it does.

I don't think that I'm a happy camper right now - as the clumps see to be frizzing out. I didn't use much gel - so will give it another try in a couple of days. Re the length - am actually thinking of cutting to the length of exptnl. We'll see!

Thanks MsG and Notty!

Notty I can really only put up the sides and front - which I do quite often. Because I 'do' my hair every day it's not an issue that I cannot pineapple. I did like to plop sometimes when it was a bit longer and so far,as it's growing, I have only plopped for like 3-4 minutes because I was afraid to leave it in any longer.

My curls get pulled out so easily like yours do but I don't find that with it shorter it's any worse than when it was long.

ETA - where the heck did all that red color come from in my hair - it must be the flash!!

I sometimes do my hair like this, with a rat tail comb. It's very time consuming but I like the results. It's basically how they taught me to do it at Ouidad a hundred years ago when I went there. Back then this method gave me super curly clumpy hair, but now, since my hair is much, much longer, it gives me defined curly waves with less frizz. I can also get pretty good height at the roots because I use long duckbill clips to clip the roots. I'm usually too lazy to do it though, so I just use a wide tooth comb or an pick to distribute product. It comes out flatter on top when I do it that way, since I'm not sectioning the hair and placing it properly.

Wow-everyone's hair is beautiful! Spacegirl, you have my dream hair and length-absolutely gorgeous!!! I currently get the best clumps when I use my Denman brush for everything (which all seem to frown upon, but it works for me), so I will definitely be stealing one of the wee ones combs this evening to strategically hide in my shower for the morning.
Just got around to looking at everyone's pictures. Thanks to xcptnl and missnotty for the great pictures. I love both of your curls so much.

I just realized yesterday that what I *thought* was a fine tooth comb (my husband's) is nowhere near as fine as the ones you guys are talking about, so it looks like a trip to Sally's is in my future. I am looking forward to trying this the proper way (i.e. ZigaZaga's way!), as my modified way has only been giving me soso results the last couple of days.

While poking around on ZigaZaga's fotki, I fell in love with her ribbon skipcurl method, since, when my hair does feel like making ringlets, I have noticed that the pieces are flat like a curled ribbon. ZigaZaga--can you advise on whether these methods can/should be combined? I am going to a concert tomorrow night (Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet--I love her music AND HER CURLS), and would love to have special hair for the event.

And finally, spacegirl I LOVE your long curls. I am hoping to grow that long, but sadly my hair only brushes my shoulders now.

OK Notty did it so I have the the go ahead.

Off to "wash" my hair now. (Yes it IS 10:45am and I am still in my pajamas.)

ETA: Ok dangit. Make that 11:30 and NOW I really am going to go get in the shower. lol

Now that my hair is closer to being dry, I am not liking this at all! It is totally flat and straight on top. Uuuugggly! I might have left in too much conditioner and I can tell I didn't get near enough gel near the top of my head, or anywhere else, since I didn't scrunch it in upside down. I'm going to keep trying the fine-tooth comb thing, but I think I'm going to have to go back to doing things upside down.

Last night I didn't think this had done much for my hair but this morning I woke up with really wonderful hair. I DO NOT get second day hair as a rule so this is quite the surprise. I did nothing last night but sleep on it and my hair looks like I set it on really big rollers. Huge loopy curls. Good enough to wear without doing anything to it but clipping back my bangs.

Not sure if this is repeatable but will try it again and see what happens. This might be a way for me to not have to wet every morning. Not sure I'd want this style all the time though. Maybe when it gets longer.

Could someone post up a picture of the comb you are using? Id like to see just how small you mean. This is a really interesting thread to read, whenever I have tried brushing/combing out my hair even with conditioner it seems to loose its curl pattern (though Iv only ever used a fairy wide comb) but the whole idea seems weird to me, has everyone found it has enhanced their curl? Maybe it works better for a certain curl type?

Ok, pretty much think I did everything wrong because the top of my hair is STUCK to my head and the rest is just hanging limp. I think I need to do like franfaircloth and do it upside down? Hmmmm.

Off to reread the thread.

Seek not to change the world. Rather seek to change your mind about the world.
I pulled this from Jonathan's Hair Tips at frizzoff.com:

"Combing clean, wet hair with a wide tooth comb is the most effective way of removing loose hair that contributes to tangles."

"Switching from a wide-tooth to a fine-tooth comb on detangled wet hair treated with Curl Keeper will encourage more defined ringlets."

Good. I was going to use a wide-tooth comb tomorrow at least on the very top of my head where it's so doggone thick (didn't think I'd ever get the fine-tooth comb through that part this morning), but this sounds to me like a wide-tooth comb should be used first and then the fine-tooth comb after CK has already been worked through the hair. -- ??
