How many of you have tried.....

OK! OK!, I did it!! I think I'm going to like this, but I will probably have to make a few adjustments. The hardest part of this to deal with was doing everything upright - I'm not used to that. So, I used a little KCKT as a leave-in, stood back under the shower for a couple of seconds just to make sure it was distributed well and was very wet, then got out of the shower and put the first puddle of CK through my hair as if putting my hair in a ponytail. I started out trying to do it in sections while combing and adding CK as I did each section and decided the he!! with that and just started combing it a lot - upwards, outwards, you name it. Then I scrunched in a little gel while leaning over to each side, then turned upside down and swung my head back & forth a few times to get more separation

Thanks guys. I posted some pictures of how I clip when I do my hair this way and the comb I use.

franfaircloth, I feel like I've been growing my hair for a million years. Ugh, it takes forever, but eventually it will get there.

Curly Girl Fla, I sometimes use a Denman brush in the shower after I condition my hair. It feels so good on my scalp!

msgiblet, I do my hair right side up these days. It's too long to do upside down and I've always had that problem some people seem to have with the back of my hair sticking straight up after I flip my head over. Not a good look. I'm also one of the plopping-challenged, so I never even try to do that any more. To do this sort of sectioned CK application, I put most of the top and front of my hair up into a jaw clip and section by section apply the CK, comb it through, then do the raking/shaking thing. I do the underside of my hair first, then take down pieces from the clip and do them. ZigaZaga's way sounds a little simpler, by keeping all of her hair in the front and doing the hair back to front. I might try that instead of doing the jaw clip thing.

I use duckbill clips to get the height at the roots. I use three or four going back and two on the sides. I think there is a video of Ouidad or Johnathan Torch clipping like this. It's not the way I usually clip my hair, but it certianly makes the top of my hair higher. If I diffuse, it's only after my hair is mostly dry and I want to speed up the process so I can get out the door. If I try to diffuse when it's wet I end up with a ton of frizz. I haven't even been scrunching with my Curlease towel lately, I just apply product (mostly CK lately) and then let it sit for a while until I feel like the roots are dry enough to take the clips out.

Like I said, this methodical product application/combing is way too time consuming for me to do every day, although I can definitely get second or even third day hair this way. Lately all I've been doing is raking CK through soaking wet hair, distributing it with a hair pick and then letting it air dry. My hair never looks all that great in the summer anyway, so why bother knocking myself out? :^)

Now that my hair is closer to being dry, I am not liking this at all! It is totally flat and straight on top. Uuuugggly! I might have left in too much conditioner and I can tell I didn't get near enough gel near the top of my head, or anywhere else, since I didn't scrunch it in upside down. I'm going to keep trying the fine-tooth comb thing, but I think I'm going to have to go back to doing things upside down.

Back to the topic at hand. After reading about some of your results, I agree that I am the kind that needs to do some things upside down, so tomorrow I am going to try combing right side up but scrunching and sectioning and twirling and so forth upside down.

BTW--here is the comb I used. Just a regular old man's pocket comb. I used the fine end, but I think this is not as fine as ZigaZaga's.

So, you're not using B&A anymore -- or any other gel for that matter -- on top of the CK when it's really hot & humid?

I've been using just CK lately. Sometimes I use B&A over it, sometimes I use just B&A and no CK. Today I used FOTE Aloe Vera gel alone, just to see what it would look like. My hair is very big now!

As I'm typing this my hair is up in clips. I tried it today with some KY jelly and angell. I think I may have applied too much KY because there was some definite foaming action going on.

I have more clumps than usual and it helps when choosing what areas to clip. I also like that combing after applying the KY seemed to tame the rogue strads of hair and make them clump together. My only concern is that my waves feel a bit pulled out.

Will update after it's dry.

ETA: I did forget to finger comb after using the fine toothed comb. I'm not sure how much of a difference that makes.

I don't see any reason if you are used to doing things upside down that this would not still work doing it upside down. Like spacegirl I get a weird back if I do. I clip on top as I go after combing the sections straight upwards, but I use smaller clips on top pushing them towards the back. Sometimes I use the big plastic duck bills underneath the canopy - one on each side and one in the back. I don't like product, especially gels, on my scalp - I find my hair holds what I do to it better if I don't - the curl starts high on me. Also I have a long face so I don't need a lot of height or I would probably be looking for a different system of doing things! I mostly want to make sure the back does not get a great divide. ewwww!

I do scrunch and diffuse upside down. The clips come out only when dry. When I scrunch out the crunch I do that upside down too. And I do a slight rub on my scalp with finger tips to kinda lift things but have to watch out overdoing it as that can loosen short hairs and bring on the frizzzzzz. I don't do anything as "violent" as is on the skip and curl video.

Took me a lot of trial and error to figure out the right size of clumps. Too thick and I got looser curls. And the right amount of product. I used to comb the gel through but I think that pulled out some my curl with the weight of it. It might work better for some of you though.

I have gotten really fast at doing this routine. It does not take me long at all anymore.

My pics are up in my Fotki. I have much less frizz than usual, but also much less curl. However, I am happier with less frizz less curl than I am with more frizz, more curl.

That said, I also fell asleep on my hair and it's also not 100% dry yet so today was not the greatest test day. Will try again tomorrow.

Wonder what would happen if you combed only the top layers what would happen. Or try breaking up the clumps more.

I did this method this morning but not using a fine tooth comb as I couldn't find one anywhere - instead I used the least wide tooth comb I had. I got really defined clumpy ringlets underneath but the top layer and the roots were flat and almost straight. But I think the flat roots were because I didn't clip for some reason and I air dried. I'll try again tomorrow but using the diffuser.

ETA: I just remembered I had a dream last night about doing this technique. I can't believe I forgot about it! In the dream my hair turned out really well ... shame it didn't happen like that IRL.

Ok, pretty much think I did everything wrong because the top of my hair is STUCK to my head and the rest is just hanging limp. I think I need to do like franfaircloth and do it upside down? Hmmmm.

Off to reread the thread.

The comb I use has 12 teeth to an inch...or 7 to a cm. I went and counted! LOL!

I would not want to use a brush! Just the other day I brushed out my dry hair and it was BAD! I have been combing since last Fall and have not seen hair breaking off. I used to get breakage before coming here when I did brush my hair wet. You are right Koukla it could be because the comb is fine, who knows.

Isn't it interesting how we are all so different?

This sounds like a variation of the B&A Method, which included using a sulfate shampoo, and then after-shower brushing with a Denman brush while wet and upside-down to increase clumping and curl. Iirc, people ditched the sulfate 'poo part of it very quickly, loved what the brushing did for their curl pattern and clumping, but then gradually began finding breakage.

It's possible using a fine-toothed comb would decrease the likelihood of breakage just because it slows you down and requires you to be a bit more careful than a brush does. I don't think I'll try this yet, but I'll keep an eye on the thread.

Here is the result. No frizzies & I am very pleased!!
