Default Chia gel?

Okay, so I've just ordered a pound of flax seeds from mountainroseherbs.com because the aloe vera gel I wanted had just sold out and I figured that would make a suitable replacement. I haven't received the order yet, but I'm already thinking that if it happens to work for me, that won't be so great because come September, I'll return to school and live in a dormitory where there is no way for me to simmer anything unless I break into someone's apartment once a week. So no flax seed gel for me - I suppose I should hope it doesn't work, then!

Anyway, I know that chia seeds make a gel and you don't even have to cook them to make them do it - does anyone think that this gel might do any good holding and moisturizing hair like flax seed gel would? Goodness, the search never stops!

It sounds like a good idea, but after a couple minutes I couldn't find anywhere selling sample sizes, lol. Is there like a health food store selling it in bulk that you could buy a little bit and try it?

Well, that's encouragement enough for me - and I know mountainroseherbs has it! The smallest size is four ounces for $3.25. Once they get the aloe vera gel back in stock, I want to make another order there, so I will include the chia seed in that! I sure hope they get that aloe in soon, because now there are two experiments I want to try. Anyone know how long it usually takes them to restock? lol

If you use preservative, it will last for months (or longer) without refrigeration.

I've just thought of something else - with things like flax seed or chia gel, might diffusing, especially with the pixiecurl method, cook it a bit? I need to stop thinking about this stuff.

Kathymack, I take it you've experimented like this before - what kind of preservatives did you use?

I used Optiphen. I didn't want to take any chances. You can get it at any of the online ingredient places.

Thanks! If it turns out I just absolutely love flax seed gel (ha! a PJ like me?), this will definitely help.
