My hair is shorter than yours and I'm able to pineapple it... I don't get the back.. but I get the side and top.
I just flip over and try to grab as much hair as I can use my fingers as a comb... I bring it to the top of head as close to my forehead as possible and wrap it.
When I wake up and undo it.. I look like a freak.. it stands straight up. I spray some water on it and work it down. My 2nd day hair is usually better than my first.

My hair is much longer but it's exactly the same method. Flip your head upside down, grab your hair and put it into a ponytail that sits right on the top of your head. misfitcurl has a picture of her pineappled hair in her fotki.
I don't use Deva products so I can't comment on them. There are tons of CG products and just as many opinions about which are best.
Hopefully someone with Deva product experience will provide you some insight.
You have very pretty hair.

The pineapple should be fairly loose, and dont pull it or rearrange the curl to get it up there, just flip head, gather curls, and scrunchie!
You can be CG without pineapple though, I have to CO wash every day, very rarely does the pineapple save me from that.
For your flat roots, have you tried plopping, and/or clipping the roots?

Your curls look 3a/b to me since the curls stay even at a shorter length. Very pretty!

OH so the pineapple is just a pony tail that sits high on top of your head?! i was thinking more along the lines of it looking like a bun, resembling a pineapple slice... i didnt think that it resembled an actual pineapple, with the leafs up on top! i''m such a goofball. LOL. but does the pineapple involve twisting of any sort?

No twisting!!
Just flip over, use your fingers to gather your hair, scrunchie and that's it.

well i tried the pineapple the last two nights and it did NOT help at all.... maybe cause i didnt use a scrunchie... but my hair went all over the place and it just loooked stupid.... but i guess its mostly because i have some really short layers on top and back....

Was it dry before you did this? Because if it isn't completely dry it doesn't work.

CurlyOver40! - Thank you!! I have been thinking I couldn't try a pineapple because my hair was too short. I never thought of just doing the top and sides. It is long enough I can get a top ponytail in the back, so surely on the top of my head!
I am going to try this tonight!

I have never tried the pineapple technique and I am long overdue. Maybe tonight I will. Thanks to all who gave the details of how they do it.
megaboo -- You and your hair are gorgeous! Great pics!
