One length vs. Layered , Which is best for curly girls?
 

was just wondering how you all feel on this subject, at the moment I'm all one length or mostly (still growing out my shaved underneath fiasco) but lately ive been wondering if layers would be better :?

I don't know what best for other curlies, but for me, a layered cut is best. Maybe I'll change my mind if I get someone to cut my hair a different way. All I've known is layering my hair, even when relaxed. I cut it so that I can also wear it straight when I want a change.

hmmm... i think it all depends on the face shape and type of curl and all that jazz... so i can't really give you a straight answer...

i currently have layers, but it's because i've always had layers in my hair, and i wanted to keep length, so i kept the layers. but sometimes i think for me, i would be better off with a straight-across cut. my longest layer is underneath (of course) and it sometimes looks very odd because i tend to have straighter hair underneath, plus it is longer and more weighed down... so it kind of looks like the top of my hair doesn't really 'fit' with the bottom, if that makes sense? and if i am having a particularly stringy hair day... it's really bad.

if i would scarifice length and get an all one-length cut, i think i might be able to acheive clumpier curls that i like better, and maybe my hair wouldn't look so strange? eventually i will do this... but i want to wait until the top layers grow out a bit more. i don't want to be a triangle-head either, sigh.

I tend to go toward layers because my canopy goes flat, especially at my current length. But if they are too short, I lose curl, so I have to be careful. I'm thinking of doing it myself this week. I haven't had a cut in over 6 months because I don't trust stylists. When I do my own layers I can take into account my curl pattern.

My hair is way too huge without layers. It literally looks like it weighs about a thousand pounds.

I think that shorter hair in general looks better with layers. It helps to avoid the "triangle-head" look. Based on your curl type and thickness of hair, longer hair can get away with layers or being all one length.

My hair gets too big and looks VERY traingle shaped without layers.

I think layers help to create shape and some sort of style. They can also create movement in the hair, so it doesn't just "hang". My hair is currently layered, and it helps form the curl better. Just my opinion :wink:

I am trying to get rid of layers to grow my hair to one length. I like the shape of layers and the lighter, less bulky feel of my hair, but I get different amounts of shrinkage and curl with them, which is frustrating and makes my hair harder to manage as it grows out - it also requires more frequent trims to maintain the layers and I want to avoid trims as long as possible.

It really depends on the person, their hair thickness and curl type, and their own schedule. For me, getting layers cut into my hair and learning to blow dry with a diffuser was a god-send. I couldn't handle my immensely thick one-length hair. I can shower in the mornings now instead of having to shower by 7:30 at night or my hair still wouldn't be dry the next day. The layers also have to be done right too. Even after I had my hair cut short, my curls and waves were still bouncy because the layers were cut properly in the proper places.

I like layers. My hair used to be all one length, but since I'm growing out a relaxer my stylist recommended layers. That way I can get rid of the straightened hair faster without losing as much total length.

Also, my canopy tends to be frizzy, but I have the cutest ringlets underneath - layers help show them off!

I am a long hair...I do my own trims and think my hair looks better now (one length with faerie ends) than it has in my whole life. Depending on what products I use, my canopy can be a bit flat, but I often wear it pulled back on the sides, anyway...I kind of like it that way!

--- Alas, my hair is only shoulder length!! I wish it was that long, though!

I'm so glad this poll was posted! I spent many years in the back and forth, cut layers and grow it out thing. It's been a long time since I got any layers cut and I was thinking about doing it again. My canopy is curly, but not as curly as underneath and I want those tighter curls to show through. I'm so, so scared of somebody cutting really short layers in my hair, though! But I'm also really tired of triangle head!

Before I made the mistake and started cutting my hair into shorter and shorter layers over time(you can't do that with wavy hair), I have to say that my hair looked the best when it was longer and cut into long layers with some random pieces cut shorter for a little more volume and curl definition. My boyfriend's sister, who is a 3B/C, has her hair cut the same way and it looks terrific. I definitely feel that longer is better, but a little bit of layer can go a long way to give your hair that extra oomph.

hmmm. I have long layers from Carlos at devachan, and i am due to go back at end of feb after a YEAR with no cutting.I think i like the long layers but they are not real obvious. of course my dream is to have long one length hair down to my waist but i don't know how it would look. letting it go curly this way is very new to me--i did not straighten it before but i used to brush and shampoo and all that which would give me the east west problem. so now it hangs better -more north south except i don't know if it is because i am moisturizing and caring for it better or bc it has the long layers. who knows???
