UK Curly's-What do you use?

I live in the UK and am finding hard knowing which products that are availablw to me are CG...Any UK curlies who can tell me which products they use?

islandmixed 08-25-2008 12:37 PM

Let me be the first to tell you if your looking for a great co wash conditionor thats moisturizing then try out the vo5 moisture milks range, available at poundland for 1. Alot here just found out that they stock these at poundland and they seem to work very well.

Styling product i use fantasia ic olive gel, or sometimes this curl keeper lotion from africa`s best. the gel gives more volume, the curl lotion gives define curls with a more natural look.

Here are some websites for you that sell great stuff (a lot of the stuff I use is natural-I find it easier to understand the ingredients lists and I find a lot of cg drugstore stuff is hard to find!)

http://www.handmadenaturals.co.uk/
http://www.aubreyorganicsuk.co.uk/
http://www.faithinnature.co.uk/
http://www.greenpeople.co.uk/

Shops:
Poundland- def get the V05 moisture milk range conditioners
Holland and Barrett- great for finding stuff, they do Australian Organics conditioners which are my fav, plus others, also sell Linseeds, which you use to make Flaxseed Gel (a great, cheap home made gel-find the recipe on recipe thread)
Superdrug - pure coconut oil in small tubs
Superdrug or Boots -usually do own naturals/organic range of conditioner (not completely natural) but may well be cg
- Inecto (sp?) conditioner where coconut is a big ingredients
- Shockwaves/ V05 hair gel
Boots-def get their own curl creme (pink in big tub) amazing for creating ringlets

For the more talked about stuff on this board you have to pay more shipping but here are some sites
http://www.mariposa-import.com/
http://www.shesells.eu/
http://www.lexies-curls.de/joomla/
Curlmart here on naturally curly ( will have bigger shipping costs)

No strictly cg but their stuff is big at the moment (plenty of threads if you search, and their shipping is actually very gd!

Hello :) I'm not in the UK, but when I looked at the Africa's Best curl lotion ingredients at a local store yesterday, there was at least 1 'cone in it. It's possible that the ingredients aren't the same over there as they are in the states, but i wanted to give you a heads up.

That being said, the Africa's best oil makes a GREAT DT, and it's basically just a hodgepodge of a million different oils, without any questionable content :)

curlylaura 08-25-2008 01:11 PM

I use the sulphate free shampoos and conditioners from Naked bodycare. Available in Boots as well as Boots coconut and almond oil deep conditioner, Boots pink curl cream and Umberto Giannini's Curl Friends Scrunching Jelly.

I've also tried Australian Organics shampoo and conditioner from Holland and Barrett.

I'm also going to try the Curl Keeper substitute KY Liquid (yes, the lubricant) I've just got to remember to pick some up.

Yes you are right the curl lotion does contain meithcone i believe...not to sure if thats the worst kind but i dont use it much, only if i want a more natural look. Yeh their herbal oil is great its just all 100% oils which is a bargain for the price.

I did hear that sta sa fro does a curl lotion called 2 in 1 moisturizer and activater and it contains only like 7 ingredients, heard its much better then the africa`s best so i will look for that one, it comes in a orange bottle so iam going to find that product, it does leave my hair crispy when i use the africa`s best.

Hi! Where do you get your Sweet Almond Oil and your Aloe Vera Gel from? I've seen both on Holland & Barrett But not sure if they are the right thing:

This is the oil http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...R_H080W000.gif and the label sayshttp://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...loeveragel.jpg

The gel says 99.9 % Aloe Vera Gel on the front, what does that mean? Is it as good as 100%? This is the tube, btw (didn't have label available on site or bigger pic!)http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...R_H080W000.gif

I'm also looking for Distilled Water for a lightening treatment with honey, anyone knows where to get it?

sexyjacksparrow 09-05-2008 07:35 AM

I'm slowly easing myself into CG (or modified anyway). My hair seems happy enough with no-cones but it does really like sulphates so my roots are looking a bit yuk right now.

CG products I've found so far that I love:
Superdrug coconut and almond intensive conditioner
Boots pink curl creme
Umberto Giannini scrunching jelly

I intend to buy more stuff soon as well. My local Waitrose seems to have quite a few brands with at least some CG products - Green People, Neal's Yard, Louise Galvin, Duchys, Daniel Galvin Jnr. Some of them are on the more expesnive side though but can probably afford it since I'm saving a bunch on my new fave curl creme and intensive conditioner (I was previously using Paul Mitchell serum and intensive conditioner which are about 12 a pop each).

kat180 09-05-2008 07:39 AM

have u tried added a bit of lemon juice to your conditioner when u co-wash? That helps greasy roots

sexyjacksparrow 09-05-2008 07:50 AM

I'll give that a try, Kat. I'm alternating between co-washing and low-poo washing at the mo (with water washes in between as well). I'm easing myself into it!

The Body Shop - Cottonseed Curl Boost

I am trying to find an alternative to pink boots - just because my hair is looking a bit fluffy and I am going through the elimination process......... again!! I could also do with a heat protector as the winter months mean more diffusing! The Body shop Cottonseed Curl Boos seems to check all the boxes but is it GC?

I don't use the body shop products much as there so called natural products seem to have a lot of ingrediants in them. However this is the ingrediants of thier Curl Boost:

Aqua, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Caprylyl Glycol, PEG-100 Stearate, Polyquaternium-72, Sodium Polyacrylate, Hydrogenated Polydecene, Hydrolysed Wheat Protein PG-Propyl Silanetriol, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Gossypium herbaceum, Mel, Panthenol, Benzyl Benzoate, Phenylpropanol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Parfum, Sodium Chloride, PPG-5 Laureth-5, Citric Acid, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Linalool, Benzyl Salicylate, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, Limonene, Citronellol, Phenoxyethanol, Hydroxycitronellal.

Hi there

I use Johnstons Baby conditioner for a co washing and more recently in Poundstretcher I found a Spearmint Original Source conditioner and also a Japanese make scalp scrub which I am loving. I use Shea Moisture leave in conditioner and its great as I have thick dry hair. Styling wise I use Boots curl creme and CK and have also used aloe gel. A few days ago I discovered Anita Grant site and have ordered some samplers from her range it looks great and it specially for naturally curly or afro caribbean hair and seems to be CG.

ural0000 10-05-2008 06:53 AM

I've just traipsed through boots looking for cg-compatible products.
Managed to pick up the fabled pink curl creme and a boots essentials gel (smells v nice - cucumber-y?); also managed, after some searching, to find silicone free conditioners, since even the water soluble 'cone in the Naked Rescue conditioner seems to make my hair feels a bit gunky.
My haul are Original Source Mint&TeaTree condish and their WhitePear&Avocado condish.
We'll see how they agree with my barnet.
Also noticed that a couple of the boots essentials and the ASDA essential care natural extracts conditioners are silicone free, not all of them though.

The other thing I've noticed - cg-compatible preoducts seems to be dirt cheap! PJ-ing without guilt????:laughing3:

Yes, it's CG. I've been using it on and off for a while and it suits my hair - it works well with home made flax seed gel or Umberto Giannini Curl Friends gel.

maisiemugwump 10-05-2008 02:46 PM

Thank you very much for the link I have visited the site and it is really good. I have already ordered some samples from Anita Grant but will definetly look at this site in the future.

Thanks Janeyliz, I bought some Giannini the other day but haven't got round to using it yet, so I will give that a try.
I used the Bodyshop Cottonseed Curl Boost tonight with Aussie Miracle Moist as a leave in and Biotera styling gel. My hair is nice and soft with bounce (which I think is down to the mm), my curls are defined and they shine (due to the Bodyshop cream) but I think I need more hold thn the biotera gel.

Curl Revitalizer

Hi
Can anyone suggest a curl revitalizer, so I can attempt to get second day hair. I have tried the Pantene one but I find that a bit hairsray like - sticky! Anyone know of any others you can get in the uk?
:walk:

goldencurls8 10-07-2008 07:01 AM

Hi, the Umberto Giannini curl friends spray is pretty good - not quite as sticky as the Pantene/hairspray type ones. On completely dry hair it can be a bit stringy though, I tend to dampen my hair a bit first for better results. My favourite curl refresher has always been the Dream Curls by John Frieda, it generally fixes my hair pretty well if I'm feeling lazy.

Jorgelina 11-05-2008 05:40 AM

Anyone knows where to buy a Goody Brush, the jojoba infused one in particular. I missed my opportunity to buy it at Bodycare in Metrocentre and I don't know if I'll be able to go back before leaving the UK. I looked for it in Boots and in Superdrug but it's nowhere to be seen! Any clues?
Thanks in advance!
