Mag Sulfate intolerance??

Hey all you curlies who's hair can't stand mag sulfate... I have a question

Was your hair dry, and that's what clued you in? Or was it just big frizz issues that let you know your hair wasn't liking the mag sulfate?

I've been keeping my eyes out for anything, since I've been using a couple of different products (switching it up) with and without mag sulfate and I just can't tell if my frizz is coming from that or if my hair is just being frizzy...

It's definitely not dry... I just have this frizz that nothing is able to tame.

Any help you can give is appreciated

Can't remember which products I used with Mag Sulfate, but my hair was just getting drier and drier - flyaway would be a good term. I decided to go with other products without it. My favourite as you know is CK, but there are other ones out there as well. I also like BHRG which doesn't have it in it either. One of the first ingredients I look at to avoid is Magnesium Sulfate, then the dimethicones; and also wheat proteins...............now glycerin that's another story....My hair told me just the other day that if I wanted to put pure glycerin in it, my hair would perform wonderfully for me

yeah, see... that's what's got me worried. Not even CK can stop this frizz! lol

I have a really bad feeling it's the mag sulfate *sigh* which makes me really really sad, as the curl activator products I have with it in the ingredients (re:coil, and jessicurl's RR and CCSS) REALLY work wonders on my hair.

oh well. I guess if that's what it is, I'll either deal with the frizz or find another curl activator. THanks notty!!

Just FYI. My hair hated JC RR and CCSS, but it actually doesn't mind re:coil. My guess is the concentration of mag sulfate is way less in re:coil.

This area is under construction as my hair type changed and nothing works well for me. I shampoo, I condition and pretty much have done nothing but chuck my hair in a messy bun for the past oh...year? Yeah, I'm that lazy.

No...going no-poo or CG does not work for me. It leaves me overconditioned and oily in a second no matter what I use, so that's not what's not working.
good to know. I do have the frizz mostly at the roots, but the rest of it doesn't seem any more poofy than usual... and the ends feel ok too...

Maybe my hair just KIND of dislikes the mag sulfate, and doesn't flat out HATE it.

It does seem jsut a tad worse with the jessicurl today than it has with the re:coil, though, so I think you're probably right about the concentration of it.

Darn! lol

The curls around my face really seem to like the jessicurl stuff. Cute little bouncy 3B ringlets. Oh well.

Don't be sad, there are tons of great products that don't have it! My hair isn't sensitive to it--but I prefer not to use it.

With me it was FANTASTIC ringlets surrounded by frizz whenever I used Jessicurl. It was because of those fantastic ringlets that I kept thinking it would work. I would use other products get ok curls but no frizz. So then I would use Jessicurl again - get RINGLETs but mega frizz. I finally figured out I cannot have the ringlets without the frizz. Now other products with the mag sulfate lower down in the ingredient list just didnt do much for my hair - no ringlets, no major frizz.

It's sad - becuase I love the way the products smell, the way it goes into my hair, and the ringlets but the frizz was amazing and I don't typically get a lot of frizz/fuzziness.

I guess if I have to choose betwee the two, I'd rather have no frizz... but i'm going to hold out hope that like kathymack says, there's a solution out there!

Maybe KCCC...

Since I started with the more natural products, my hair has gotten better and better. I'm using leave in, curl creme and no gel. Great curls (look at my folki to see the difference) and minimal frizz.

yeah, I'm about half natural, at this point. I love my suave/v05 conditioners, and don't see any reason to give those up at the moment but I have really liked the Kinky Curly products I have.

There are just so many things out there that I want to try! lol

That was me totally. I loooooved the RR and CCSS combo, the first couple weeks I had awesome hair. BUT and I mean a big BUTT then frizz started. It was that halo/ canopy kinda spider webby weird stuff. My hair still looked good aside from that. I could use the conditioners but not the cleansing cream, ugh crispy critters! I miss Jessicurl to be honest.

Crazy-picky hair; likes some oils and proteins, but not others, can tolerate some glycerin.

Current products-
Co-wash: Suave/Vo5/TJ Refresh
Rinse out & Leave in: Suave Tropical Coconut/Garnier Triple Nutrition
Gel: Herbal Essences Set Me Up/Aussie Tizz No Frizz
*sigh* yep, that's it exactly. Massive halo frizz that can't be tamed no matter what gel/cream/glycerin product i load onto it.

in all honesty, it's not AWFUL... it's just not what I'm used to. I guess I just need to figure out if I like the curls or the frizz-free better. lol.

My coworker actually said she really liked it today. And then she added that she liked it becuase it looked like I didn't put anything into it at all. not so sure how I feel about THAT! lol

My hair was feeling dry and crisp too and I figured it was the mag. sul. I have been using Rockin Ringlets and I love the way my hair looked and felt (before the dreaded dryness and crisp set in) for about two weeks now. I had an epiphany one morning and decided to put Jessicurl's Deep Treatment on soaking wet hair as a leave in first. It seemed to do the trick.

I scrunch it in then put a quarter size puddle of RR and scrunch that in. Then I plop for 5 minutes or so, take my hair down, part it and add another two quarter sized puddles to each side. Twist a few sections for better definition, scruch one last time with a tee shirt and let it air dry for 20 to 30 minutes. Then I just blow dry (NOT diffuse) the undersides for volume - like picking up sections and just pointing the air underneath, hope that makes sense.

So for now, it's working great - I get soft hair and the fabulous curls/waves that RR gives me. I guess time will tell if it will keep it. I hope it does since I have actual movement in my hair now and nice body too. Very natural. I love it so I hope my little system keeps working.
HG's: (I alternate)
DEP Sport Gel, B&A Gel, Aura Naturalle Gel
(gel from mid-length down only, all used over a leave in)

Method: Air dry 20 minutes, then blow dry for volume.

2/3 mix waves/curls - coarse, frizz prone, med. thick, porous, at-home color for gray, protein sensitive but I still need it sometimes, glycerin-sensitive (I think) in high humidity, NOT CG but like stuff w/o silicones and that rinses out clean, wash with regular S&C 2x a week.
Were you getting frizz, Csarac, or just dryness?

My hair liked the mag suf just fine, but my skin did not.
Scalp felt dry, tight, and hot (if that makes sense) with the JC stuff. Bummed because I really liked it.

Using:
Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose or Trader Joe's Nourish condish; Kiss My Face Upper Management Styling gel
Drying: with microfibre waffle weave dish towels from Walmart and a diffuser when I feel like it
Contemplating: trying a curl cream
I used the Jessicurl products for 6-8 weeks when I hair started to poof and then limply frizz. It wouldn't curl anymore, and just frizzed. I was quite sad because I really like the products until that point. I still love the deep conditioner.

Are you using anything that encourages clumping? That seems to discourage fuzzines, as well as increase curl definition.

In the Jessicurl line, that's Confident Coils. I suspect that CurlKeeper may also work that way. Aloe Vera gel also seems to contribute to clumping.

I am also experimenting with just blow drying the top underside of my hair for volume after it's mostly air dried. It so much smoother and softer with nice curls if I just let it air dry but it's so flat I hate it.

By the way, the JC deep treatment as a leave in is still working in keeping my hair soft with the RR...

ETA: I will try the same with the Confident Coils too (using the Deep Treatment underneath) and now that I am reading all these posts, I will try it with the CK too since I was using that for a while with good results.

Sigh. I just want soft, nicely defined curls and waves with some volume, movement, shine and no crunch. I am asking too much, aren't I?

in all honesty though, but hair doesn't need much encouragement to clump.. i end up separating bits all the time because it's TOO clumpy.
