Default How do YOU Get Volume?

Hello Everyone. I know this question has prolly already been asked like a million times but how do you get volume on top of your head and in the body of your hair? If anyone could answer or post links to other helpful threads that would be great. I already do upside down diffusing and that doesn't seem to help. Thanks a ton!

I've been having more luck lately with plopping. I had been trying to pin my roots, but I wasn't very good at it... seems like they always ended up stringy or tangled looking.

If you need the plopping vid, it's near the end of this article: http://www.wikihow.com/Follow-the-Cu...for-Curly-Hair

Clipping works wonders for me. I learned the technique after watching a video someone had done on this forum. I clip sections of my hair up when they're semi dry ,and the leave my hair for about an hour. It really helps me get some volume at the top.

Applying product upside down really helps with getting rid of flat top for me. Also when I diffuse I alternate between flipping my head upright and upside down. Just as I'm about to finish diffusing I shove my fingers into my roots and ruffle up the hair there while still diffusing the lengths (this step is done upside down by the way).

I diffuse by pushing my hair up at the roots. When it is dry it actually almost sticks straight up and out all over and I have to shake it down into place.

If I still need more body (or to cover up any bald spots due to clumping), when my hair is dry, I slide my fingers in towards the roots and "stir it up" a bit, being careful not to disrupt the curl throughout the rest of the hair. It took a lot of practice to be able to do it just right.

Also I have my hair cut into layers and the top is actually quite short in comparison to the rest, to ensure I get volume. Otherwise if my hair were all one length, it would get very weighted down.

I should add that I scrunch out the crunch with heat and a diffuser, which really sets my curl up where I need it.

And the other day I had GREAT volume by accident... I had nice shiny clumpy curls and it was super-windy outside.... I thought "oh no, major frizz day" because I had a lot of errands to run and was in and out of the wind all day. But instead the more windblown it got the more volume I got with very little frizz. I lucked out. I doubt very much I could replicate it with a blow dryer, though LOL

I was nopoo for over six months, when I added soap/shampoo bar to my routine it really helped with volume. The are very gentle. More than a nopoo, but less harsh than a lowpoo. I think they remove any of the CG product build up, but not much more.

I agree with Kathy, soap bars really give me volume and for someone with thin, fine hair that's saying alot. Soap bars actually give me enough volume that I have to smooth it down a bit.

I diffuse my roots upside down. I was cursed with the kind of hair that likes to grow straight for the first 3 inches.

I find Tweek gives me extra volume without poof. Of course it has to be used on dry hair.

I use a root lifter - John Frieda Luxurious Volume Lavish Lift Root Booster or Matrix Amplify Root Lifter.
I think they are both CG.

Works wonders. I do clip the top of my hair also.

I leave the clips in when I diffuse sometimes if I'm pressed for time I just lift the roots with my Denman and hold the blowdryer there, then blast it with cold to "set it"

There's a generic version of the Matrix spray at Sally's for $4-6. Not sure how much the original is, but that's what i've been using and it works pretty well.

That and diffusing always give me a lot of volume. I have to difuse upside down though, and I DO have a lot of short layers which I'm sure helps.

I do my final rinse upside down, ACV rinse upside down, plop, apply gel upside down. Combing seems to flatten my roots also. Since I started combing before washing only and not after, the root volume improved because I get clumps all the way up.
