Scalp prob!

Okay, I went CG in June, and I would always notice after not cowashing for a while (about 3 to 4 days) that if I itched my scalp, white stuff would come off under my fingernails. Over the last few months, I have been experimenting to see what I can do to make the white flakiness go away. I have been able to stretch cowashing out to about every 4 or 5 days. Then I would start to see little flakes or crumbs on my scalp again. I tried a brown sugar/conditioner/lemon juice scrub. This solved the problem temporarily, but within a few days my "dandruff" or whatever it is would be back. Just scrubbing with water in the shower did nothing to remove it (and I mean SCRUBBING with the pads of my fingers, vigorously, for 5 minutes under warm running water). The only thing that removes the dandruff is cowashing, or scrubbing my scalp with diluted vinegar.
Lately, the little white crumbs have just been hanging around, no matter how much cowashing I do (every 3 days at most).
What's worse is that for about a month now I've noticed that my scalp is getting red. I don't think my part ever used to look like a bright pink line on my head, but it does now!
I've never had a history of dandruff before going CG. Like I said, my routine is no shampoo whatsoever, cowashing 1 to 2 times per week (sometimes 3 times per week) with suave aloe and waterlilly, and a little bit of LA looks gel or honey for hold. Occasionally I diffuse, usually airdry overnight. I tend to wet my hair daily because I work out a lot, and on days that I don't cowash I just put condish on the length.
If anybody has experienced the dandruff/ white buildup and red scalp, please, let's commiserate! I'm tempted to go buy a bottle of head and shoulders tomorrow!
2C BSL hair and lots of it!
Cheap and low-maintenance are my two favorite words!

Co-wash more often!! I used to get that, and then I co-washed every day, and after maybe half a week to a week...I'm back to no flakes, AT ALL.

I do co-wash every day, and you might try some lemon juice in you co-washes maybe once a week to cut down on the overconditioning. Or an ACV rinse. Or mix a TINY bit of low-poo into your conditioner, but don't do these things everyday, that brought back the flakes for me!

I was just discussing this with my stylist. She recommended getting a boar bristle brush and brushing my scalp to get rid of the flakes.
A scalp brush from Sally's or Walgreens might help, too, and would be gentler than the boar brush. Use the scalp brush in the shower when you wet your head. It only costs a couple of dollars.

I tried cowashing and I constantly had the waxy scalp and flakes. My hairdresser even commented on it once. Talk about embarassed!!!! I stopped cowashing and now I use all natural shampoos and have not had one problem with flakes since.

Loving natural products. Some of my favorites are:
MHC Scalp Cleanser, Donna Marie Miracurl Gelly, Robert Craig Conditioner
I get this too. I co-wash every 3 days and have minimal problems. Here's what I think helps me:
  • I use the Suave conditioner on my ends, but use Devacurl No-Poo on my scalp / roots. My scalp seems to really like the No-Poo.
  • I have the Walgreens scalp brush. Looks kinda like this but mine is white and oval-shaped. It was less than $1. I comb my co-wash products through in the shower, then use the scalp brush.
  • I also massage my scalp really well in the shower with the pads of my fingers.
I used to use Head & Shoulders before I learned about sulfates, and I really don't think I ever had dandruff - just a dry scalp that needs moisture and a little attention. Hope some of this helps!

I suffered from a persistent, waxy build up on my scalp for some years. It got so bad a couple of years ago that I just couldn't clean it from my scalp. It was particularly bad above my ears. I would scratch my scalp and be left with a thick, greasy wax that was a white/yellow colour under my nail. It was horrible. It made my hair look terrible - lank and greasy even when it was freshly washed. I tried natural remedies which I picked up from forums such as this, including washing my hair with vinegar, bicarbonate soda powder mixed with Johnson's baby shampoo, and lemon juice. This gave me some temporary relief but I smelt like a fish and chip shop! I was at my wits end and was just about to spend a significant amount of money visiting a private dermatologist when I walked into a pharmacy and noticed a shelf of 'medicated' shampoos. By this point I had worked out from the internet that I was probably suffering from seborrheic dermatitis. I bought every medicated shampoo for oily dandruff on that shelf and alternated them every day, massaging thoroughly into the scalp and sometimes doing two lots (I have to wash my hair every day). I have been able to control the condition ever since. My hair is a lot better than it used to be - not perfect but a LOT better. The ones I buy are:

Alphosyl
Oilatum
Ceanel
Polytar

Discovering these shampoos changed my life overnight. They can dry your hair out so use a good conditioner on the tips. I wish I had found out how to treat this problem earlier as I suffered for years, totally baffled about what I was suffering from and how to treat it. This is why I am posting this information now on any forum where people are talking about 'waxy dandruff'.
