So I have done absolutely nothing to my hair over the past year but trim it myself (almost one year texturizer-free! I will post pics when the actual day hits!) and I am going to get a salon trim within the next month. I am also thinking about semi-permanent colour and I don't know why. My natural hair is very black and I have not used any semi-permanent colour in about 4 years or so, so it is getting pretty dark. I really do like it dark - it's shinier, glossier and hides damage better. But I also want a change and the temptation to texturize is still very strong. So I am thinking of a deep burguny red or a chocolate brown (the only semi-colours that do anything to my hair.) I will NOT do permanent colour or any highlights.

I was disturbed though to read that semi-colour does have some chemicals and also is not really semi. I like the effect it has on my hair (loosens and stretches curls) but my hair is feeling so very soft and silky and healthy that I don't want to jeopardize that.

I usually do not ask people's opinions on what I should do, but this time I really don't know what I want! I have pics in my album of the red hair and also my more natural colour - please take a look before you vote! Thanks!

I thought you were glossing your hair?? I was going to hit you up for some tips on that.

Anyway, I voted for the dark red/burgundy. That sounds like it would look great or else, just keep your natural deep black color.

I voted for chocolate brown.

After the redo of my highlights at Devachan eventually turned brassy, I went back to my natural color (well, actually a little darker). I used a level 3 of a Sally's color. It's a semi-perm, but has lasted almost a year! (I first did it the day after Easter 05, and just redid it about a month ago.)

They're the Sally's equivalend of Redken Shades EQ (I think they're a L'Oreal color)

They say they're a "transluscent" color...not sure what that means!

Such a hard decision! Your hair is so pretty as it is! Anyway, I voted for the burgundy/red, for 2 reasons. I know what it's like to want a change, and although I think the brown or the red would look fabulous, as you can probably see I'm a lil partial to red

Well, I'd like to know which brands are good in terms of giving shine, being gentle and long-lasting. Also, have you ever tried tinted gloss? Will it cover gray hair? (I am 30% or less gray) Also, is application pretty similar to regular home hair color? How long does it last overall? What condition does it leave the hair in after? Any effect on curl pattern?

I like the Aveda brand. I have had tinted gloss in my own shade and I don't have that many greys yet, but it did cover the few I have, but not for very long. I've never attempted home hair colour - I get everything done in the salon, it's safer that way - but basically yeah, they put it in a squeeze bottle and apply, wrap the head in plastic etc. For me, it lasts a long time (way more than the 8-12 washes or whatever they say) but it leaves my hair feeling in better condition - really soft, less noticeability of split ends, shiny, less frizz, more weight - and it loosens the curl a bit, especially at the root, which means longer, more "hanging" hair.

I voted for burgandy/dark red. I just think that it would look great on your features and your complexion. I think that it would brighten you up, and that is what I always look for colors to do.

I sometimes buy a box of the red color and a box of the brown and mix them. It comes out good.

Just a thought. I had it done at the salon this time and she made my roots PINK!!!!!!!!! I was so mad!! I went and got some brown semi perm color and put it on and now it looks really good.

I'm assuming you didn't want your roots pink I put dark emerald green streaks in my hair in high school but that's another story.
I'm not especially experienced with getting my hair dyed by someone, but how the hell does that happen?!! Did she offer to fix it? What was her reaction? Good thing you're savvy enough to fix it yourself. I don't know if I would be! You go gurl
