Hair cutting help?

I have REALLY terrible split ends and breakage from YEARS of flat irons and relaxers. My hair used to be down to my waist and now it is up to my collarbone area. It's way too curly to wear natural when it's this short, but it just keeps splitting and getting damaged. The damage is the worst in the back. If I cut ALL the split end/damage off in the back down to my healthy hair, I'll only have about 3-4 inches of hair left in the back, and if I do the same to the front, I'll have about 6-7 inches there and on the sides. I really don't want a big uneven missing chunk of hair in the back of my head. Should I just try to grow it until it's long enough to wear curly, and then cut off the split ends? Or just go ahead and cut them all off, and risk having poodle-hair? I really hate wearing my hair curly at it's current length, seeing as I'm in high school and constantly get made fun of whenever I wear it curly(it wouldnt be so bad if my hair was longer and healthier...it is much less frizzy and poofy when it is long.)
What should I do?
HEEEELLLPP!!!

I feel your pain and am very sorry that people make fun of you. They are jealous and insensitive. I have a great cut but quite a bit of breakage from coloring and am just babying it right now.

If you cut it all and end up with "poodle" hair then you'll probably be miserable for a while. Maybe try babying it with DTs like sleeping with a light coating of olive oil or avocado or almond in it once a week. You can't fix it but you can protect it. I also use Blended Beauty Natural Hair Oil before I apply my gel. I don't straighten but I do dry my hair with a diffuser and the oil helps protect it from more damage.

You may want to also get it trimmed every 5-6 weeks so you can keep up with it and still be somewhat happy.

I hope this helps and things work out for you. Good luck

Unfortunately, your hair isn't going to grow with split ends. They'll just keep splitting further and further up the hair shaft.

I know it can be hard, when you're a teen to have hair that's different than other people wear. Believe me, I know, and still remember the lengths I went to to try to make my hair look "right."

Is there any chance of having your hair cut by someone who uses the Deva method, or otherwise specializes in naturally curly hair? That's really made a huge difference in how my hair behaves, even though it's in that awkward stage that seems to last forever. Because it's shaped to compliment my face and bring out the best in what my hair does naturally, it really looks tremendously different, and I feel much better about it than I ever have with it this length, which is very similar to what you're describing yours would be.

Have you thought about doing something kind of fun with your hair while it grows out? I found this site with tons of fun and funky bob cut ideas, many of which would work with the short back and longer front/sides.

I sometimes wish I looked good with short hair, because I so would have loved one of these back in HS - my hair would have been SO much easier to deal with! *lol* I think it would even look more fun with curls - especially healthy ones!

And yeah, I hate to say it, but you really have to cut off those hashed ends. Otherwise, like Morgan said, it's just going to keep splitting and never grow any longer - it might even get shorter than it is now if you don't do something about it soon.

Well, your hair will probably not grow, because the ends will break off, or split even more.

Maybe cutting it a bit will help.
