Wish me luck! Going to do my Henndigo...

So I got my Yemen henna and indigo from hennaforhair.com about a week ago. I was saving my hair that falls out in the shower to do tests with. So I did 3 tests-

Test 1:100% henna
Test 2: 1/2 henna and 1/2 indigo
Test 3: 2/3 henna, 1/3 indigo.

I mixed them together with some black tea and a squirt of lemon juice, then pushed the clumps of hair into the mixture. I covered the bowls with saran wrap and let sit for 4 hrs, then rinsed the henndigo out of the hair clumps. My husband wasn't liking the smell at all! I told him that I'm going to add some lavendar oil to it when I make the master mix, so hopefully it won't smell so bad! Anyway, the results were:

Test 1: Bright red
Test 2: Dark brown
Test 3: Reddish dark brown

Test 3 is what I was going for so I'll be mixing it up and letting it sit overnight, then will put it in my hair in the morning. Or I'm thinking of just mixing it up and putting it directly in my hair and sleep on it- I heard some people don't let it sit and release at all and it still works? I don't know, this is my first experience with this- I hope it turns out okay! And I hope my hair doesn't straighten from it like I've read other people have experienced.

Yeah, I guess if you leave it on overnight, you might not need to let it release... it'll just release while it's on your hair :P For me, it'd be a little too hard to accurately judge how long the active dye had been on my hair that way though... I might come out with bozo the clown hair.

Typically, people say to stick with what you did on your tests. If you let it dye release for 12 hours, and then sit on the test strands for 4 and you like the color, I would duplicate it as precisely as possible for the rest of your hair. otherwise, you're not guaranteed to get the same results.

And my hair didn't straighten. There were a couple of days where it was a little... strange. Not it's usual self. But it perked back up in no time with some DTs Probably didn't help that I used half lemon juice/half water for the mix.

3A hair; coloring with henna/indigo since July 2009; normally follow the CG method. Still searching for my HG products!

I hope it turned out great! I'm one who usually just applies my henna and then sleeps on it, or mixes it only a few hours pre-app. Tonight I plan on using the new Punjabi(sp?) Prime from H4H-supposed to be straight up red, not orange...I mixed it a few hours ago, and will apply in about 2 hours...who knows what color I'll end up with....waiting for your pictures
I love it! It turned out awesome! I only let the henna dye release for about 3 hrs, then mixed it with the indigo, put it on my head, and left it on overnight. DH thought I looked like an oompa loompa with my green cone head before I put the saran wrap, tin foil, and towel over my head! It was definitely weird, but it was worth it! My hair feels silky and healthy and my scalp feels really good for some reason (maybe the tea tree oil I put in the mix?). It's dark reddish brown and shiny like I wanted it! I'll post pics soon...gotta find my camera cord to plug into my computer!

Wow! That looks fabulous! I caught this too late, but maybe someone else can use these tips. I didn't find that essential oils helped with the scent much. But cinnamon powder and clover powder did. I can now stand to have the henna in my hair overnight. Before, I would have in for about 3-4 hours and have to rinse it out.

I'm also really jealous that your hair turned out so shiny so quick! It always takes me about 2-3 days to get it all rinsed out between co-washes and shampoo and shampoo bars! Mine has just about bounced back. I think.

I also love your makeup in the after pic. Lookin' good!

This area is under construction as my hair type changed and nothing works well for me. I shampoo, I condition and pretty much have done nothing but chuck my hair in a messy bun for the past oh...year? Yeah, I'm that lazy.

No...going no-poo or CG does not work for me. It leaves me overconditioned and oily in a second no matter what I use, so that's not what's not working.
Thanks so much you guys! I am really surprised how good it turned out. I threw a whole bunch of stuff into the mix to counteract the smell- lavender oil, tea tree oil, cloves, ginger, & chamomile tea. It was still strong smelling but at least it wasn't toxic fumes as with chemical hair dye!

I added some more pics of my hair today- it's a little darker and looks even healthier! For once in my life, I'm envious of my own hair!
