Check out this aloe-flax seed gel!

I keep seeing so many of these newer, smaller companies using wheat and/or panthenol. They must be inexpensive or easy to get. Too bad, as it totally ruins an otherwise perfectly good product for me.

Well, it does keep the PJ in check.

I totally agree with you about those types of companies. Ok...now I cannot wait to hear what you think of the gels!

The problem is we had to go somewhere and I was too impatient and SOTC way too early. My hair was really very soft and looked ok but it didn't hold up very well. It does dry with some crunch so it might have been ok if I had kept my paws out of it. It would probably work great for 2nd day hair since it isn't sticky and heavy at all. I'll give it another shot and keep you posted.

Maybe I didn't use enough, but even though it did dry crunchy, it didn't look like crispy noodles; it had a soft crunchiness to it if that makes any sense. I felt perfectly comfortable going into work with that kind of crunch and I would normally never do that. It scrunched out very easily and left my hair nice and soft. Personally, I don't think this one comes even close to the hold of BRHG; in fact, I'm not convinced this one will end up having a strong enough hold for me at times, either, but, again, I think I might not have used enough. Like the medium hold, I do want to test this one some more.

Ok...I ordered both too. They don't sound horrible and I always have room in my arsenal for a couple of more gels.

Ok...I got my order yesterday and today I tried the medium hold gel. I shampoo'd with Kinky Curly Come Clean, conditioned with Giovanni 50/50 (I hate their bottles) and used KBB supersilky for my leave in. I used some of DM's jelly and then a bit of the coco curly butter over that. I then used a nickel sized amount of the gel upside down and probably a dimed sized amount on the rest while upright. This gel is very liquidy so you have to be careful not to get it all in one spot. I then plopped for about 5 minutes and then diffused for about 10 minutes. It is drying now. It looks good at this point - there is a bit of crunch as it dries but it is not the poke your eyes out crunch. Also, the DM coco curly butter has a bit of a hold in my hair as well so that may boost the hold of this medium hold gel. I will report back in once my hair is dry.

It worked well for a medium hold gel for me. I am a bit frizzy but I slacked off on how much leave in I put in today thinking I was using more moisturizing stuff that I could - but nope.

I had soft crunch that scrunched out very easily and the curls are holding up well. I am thinking putting the coco curling butter under gave it some hold too. I am going to try the same routine tomorrow but with the hard hold and see what I think. I liked that it distributed well - not thick and sticky. For the price - it's a decent gel - I like it better than some higher priced gels I have bought.

I had to revive this thread--I got my Hoity Toity order today. Jan IS very, very generous with her samples, and I got the hand-written note too.

We love Jan!

I've got the medium hold gel in right now. It's not a good test day for me at all because I had to do a hair color removal test process (ColorFix) on a section of my hair and then shampooed...and I used 2 conditioners, and ...ACK. I also tried the DM coco curly pudding for the first time today...so any results are going to be very skewed.

What I can say, though, is that the gel FEELS good in my hand--not sticky or gross. And it's liquid enough that it's much easier to distribute than some of the other gels I've tried.

I'll have to do more tests with it on a more "fair" hair day.

I used a dime sized amount of the hard hold over my fairytales curly maker gel today. So far so good. I love being able to add this to other gels and having it combine nicely or to put over something else. It distributes fantastically.

I just received my order from Jan. Can I just say that I love this woman?! She e-mailed me and asked what kind of samples I might be interested in. I replied back that I can't use anything with silicones, sulfates or jojoba oil in it as it triggers my eczema. We exchanged a few e-mails in which she supplied me with some of her tricks of the trade and said she was going to send me some samples of things that worked for her.

WOW. Did she ever send me stuff! I got a stack of 4 sample tubs (maybe 1/2 oz) of body lotion (cream maybe?) with different scents. She sent me a hand cleaner sans sulfates, shampoo (has the coco betaine, but I use that anyway), made a special body wash sans jojoba oil, body lotion, cuticle salve sample, full size peppermint body butter to help stop the itch of my eczema and the tea tree body butter. There might be more, but that's all I can remember right now. All this and I only ordered the max-hold gel in the 8 oz size!

I sent her a thank you e-mail, since she was so generous and also sent her some of the observations from the board on here, such as supplying a rich conditioners without siliconea, offering the gels without the panthenol and wheat protein, etc. I'll keep you posted on her response!

This area is under construction as my hair type changed and nothing works well for me. I shampoo, I condition and pretty much have done nothing but chuck my hair in a messy bun for the past oh...year? Yeah, I'm that lazy.

No...going no-poo or CG does not work for me. It leaves me overconditioned and oily in a second no matter what I use, so that's not what's not working.

I'm really liking this stuff! I tried the medium hold for several days. I LOVE the way it distributes--more like a lotion than a gel, really. And NOT sticky on the hands.

Lately, this is the only styler I've been using, because I want to see what it does on its own.

Today (one day after color), I tried the ultra-hold for the first time. I didn't get any crunch, but maybe that's because I pixie-diffused for the last few minutes of my air-drying phase. I used quite a bit of it too.. (Maybe I just had a lot of conditioner in my hair?)

I'm going to keep experimenting with it--mixing it with some Mop-C curl creme for example...see how it works in combo with other products.

It rinses out well, holds well without the crunch...

What I really like about it is that I feel like I'm putting something GOOD on my hair, something mild, ingredient-wise, that gives pretty decent hold and curl definition.

I'm much impressed with Jan's products. I ordered her face products and she said that she would be more than happy to send me samples to supplement until I can afford to purchase all the full-size products of what I want. How sweet, especially since I'm unemployed. Thank goodness for student loans (I know, bad) and tax refunds!
