texture = best products

I feel that porosity is a factor too. I have hair that's between fine and medium but resilient curls. But the curl gets greasy, lanky and undefined (a general mess) if I over condition and I think I OC easily because my hair is porous. Oddly enough it doesn't seem to get weighed down from styling products.

I agree that, for me, curl type isn't that important when using products. In some ways it behaves like 3B and others like 2A.

So many variables

The common denominator for us is the porosity. I think my hair's a bit more coarse and thick than hers is, but we both seem to absorb in the same way.

i think i have fine to medium texture with low porosity...when i used to dye my hair it wouldn't take the dye very well...and it doesn't absorb products very much either, i can always add more...the only time my hair feels gross is when i use gel, so i'm trying to use AVG and giovanni mousse

Durr, I'm confused.

If I run up a strand backwards, it feels sort of wiry, as if the individual hair has kinks and bends. It's not slippery, but I can't say if it's ruffly or not.

I'm med to coarse in texture.

I take my color fairly easily, and it fades in about 5 weeks - but it's red, and reds do fade.

I'm a big protein hater, but not sure if that relates more to texture, porosity, or both.

Wasn't there some float test for porosity once? I haven't ever colored my hair, so I don't know how it would take to chemicals.

That's what I was thinking of, and it was moisture related. Back to the drawing board.

Oh, yay! I finally understand my hair's porosity! Based on Tiffany's article, I pretty much have textbook low-porosity hair. That explains why it's so very picky about types and amount of oil I use, because it doesn't absorb, just sits on top.

I'm extremely confused now about my texture, though. Based on how my individual hairs feel, I've always thought my hair was fine-to-medium, since the hairs range in feel from "hair, what hair?" to like a thin silk thread. But based on the likes/dislikes that textures are supposed to have, I'm the complete opposite. My hair loves emollients and humectants, but protein can give me crunchy, straw-like ends if I'm not careful with it. Why so schizophrenic, hair?

thank you, struttswife!! i have not yet done the hair strand test on porosity, but i am thinking i have a mix of medium (normal) to high porosity. are there products, ie, set it free, that can help to keep in moisture?
fyi -- i printed both the blogs on texture and porosity for further reference for myself, and will show it to friends.

nc members -- based on tiffany's blog, i wonder if a board for different types of texture, porosity would be helpful. i did put this on feedback once, did not get a reply. what do you think? redundant or helpful?

i think at the very least some threads on what works and why for hair texture/porosity would be helpful. the main thrust of tiffany's posts seem to be diagnosing what you hair is rather than addressing how to handle each type, which is fine...but it would still be awesome to have a resource for products!

Bear with me, girls I am slowly working my way through the whole hair type information so we can get down and dirty to discuss appropriate product for type. I have a LOT I want to say on that subject.

I'll try to address some of the porosity questions tomorrow. My daughter's dedication is today and I have a houseful of company, so I don't have time to do it now. I know I don't post as timely as I should, and I think you all rock for understanding how crazy things get in my life sometimes.

Have a wonderful day!

As for products, I think that we all can have input. As we learn what works for us and what doesn't, a good grip and what works for coarse vs fine and porous vs non-porous can be mapped out. I have some running around to do, but I plan to gather my thoughts and post my own guesses on my own porosity (which may well be wrong) that will probably develop as I develop a better understanding of the issue.

I wish this was as easy to grasp as dew points are!

...and potentially helpful.
My hair is so fine that it's difficult to diagnose its porosity based on the strand test. It behaves like it is very porous. it prefers humectants and does not like protein. I think this thread has helped me identify people who have a truely similar hair type to mine.
