cg's: do n e of u go from curly to straight to curly?

I am naturally curly- something like a 2c on top and 3b underneath and growing up i always had the craziest hair EVER!!! My mom has straight jet black hair, and her baby has red curly dry hair- so she never really knew how to deal with it. as i got old i would do my own hair and i'm proud of my accomplishment: getting it straight and smooth through flat ironing (at first it was str8 blower till i was introduced to the devil plates!!!). So my hair has lost some of its curls- mostly cause its damaged. i'm gonna try cg as soon as i get my little DevaCurl set but i'm curious to know how easy it is to go back an dforth between curly and str8. i've never relaxed my hair because honestly, my hair is pretty cool (when its actually healthy) cause i can trully have the best of both worlds!!

so CGs, do n e of you go back and forth? if so, how does the hair respond? are there any products you recommend for doing this? i'm forever changing my hair look so any thing you know about this, im all ears (rather, eyes )
I don't go back and forth that often now that I'm wearing my hair curly more but, I know I will straighten my hair now and then because I like variety.

The one obstacle I found was finding a heat protectant without silicones. I now have a list of possible heat protectants to try when I do straighten. I also plan on using coconut oil so that my hair won't be so dry when it's straight.

Thanks Jomar! I guess i wear my hair straight more often than curly because my curls suck! But i'm gonna try the cg soon- or better said the modified cg, and i spent all this money on good products so hopefully my curls will BEHAVE and be great!! . also, waht kinda heat protectants are you planning on using? i currently use tress semme... i dunno if it falls under cg but it get my hair str8

Oh my god! You've got some gorgeous curls -- they just need some serious TLC. They're all messed up from lack of moisture and you flat-ironing the heck out of them. Hide your flat iron for a little while, find a really good deep treatment, and let them recupe. Check out the product boards here and all the posts about hair type. I'd say you're a 3b for sure. You've got wicked curl at the roots. Your hair will come along, it just needs some lovin.
Also, really focus on technique on how to put product in your hair. Make sure you're doing it when it's sopping wet. That prevents frizz and all that poofy volume.

I think the more you get into CG and see your curls changing, the less you'll want to straighten your hair. Also, with CG products, I find the cheaper products actually work better for me. I have a full list here that I try to update as much as possible. http://curlgirljourney.blogspot.com/...-products.html

Some heat protectants are
  • Abba Pure Thermal Protect Spray
  • Aveda Brilliant Damage Control
  • Giovanni Vitapro Fusion Leave-In Hair Treatment
  • Hask Placenta Straight Solution
  • Sedu Volumizing Heat Protecting Boost
The only one I've tried is the Giovanni Vitapro Fusion Leave-in Hair Treatment. I only tried it once so I can't really give good feedback about it. Both the Tresemme Heat tamer spray and Sunsilk heat protecant spray have Amodimethicone - the lesser evil of silicones. Some modified CG's will use products with amodimethicone because it doesn't seem to build up as bad as the other silicones.

By the way, it's very admirable of you to donate your hair to Locks of Love. I wasn't so attached to my hair and could do something so selfless as that.

But I ordered some stuff and im waiting for it to coem in! Im so excited! I got the DevaCurl try me bag thingie that has 3oz sample sizes to see how it goes! I also got some curl keeper and some KCCC (acronyms kill me but i cant remember what the c's are ), and i also ordered so AG Recoil. but flat iron is going under the bed (whatever ends up down there i never find!!!) and hopefully i continue with my job so i have money to buy these products!!! I actually prepare my own homemade hair smoothy- so to speak- that i apply on my hair and let it sit in for a while. if you ever wanna try- a banana, half case of strawberries, white plain sugar free yogurt, 1 avocado, half a cup of your favorite conditioner- i try this olive oil conditionar thingie. blend it all up in the blender and apply to dry hair. put up hair in a shower cap and sit under heat (if possible) for 10 minutes. if no heat, you can just wear on your head for as long as you want. i sometimes just spend the afternoon with it. i would usually straighten it and my hair would be so smooth and would actually move and not be stiff!!! that amount of fruits actually make a large batch but you can stick it in the freezer for reuse or share with other dry hair relatives ... make sure you dont get tempted to drink it cause you put conditioner in there!!!

You don't have to splurge on big time products. Right now I'm actually using Suave Coconut Naturals Conditioner. It's awesome! I use it as a co-wash, a conditioner, a leave-in, and I can shave my legs with it as well. I got it from the grocery store last time for 2 for $3.00. Also, if you're into making your own stuff check out the posts for making Flaxseed Gel. If you can get a recipe to work for you that stuff is amazing. And very very cheap to make. Honestly, just because it's expensive doesn't make it good. You can find lots of cheap and very good products out there -- just learn your ingredients and what your hair does and doesn't like.

Iso CGs, do..you go back and forth? if so, how does the hair respond?

This isn't a big problem, since I don't use an SLS shampoo that often. I usually low-poo. So I haven't noticed that my hair is more dried out from the occasional SLS wash.

The only other thing difficulty going back and forth is this: I've become really spoiled by air-drying my hair curly all the time. I no longer like taking 20 min. or so to straighten my hair with the big round brush and blow dryer. It seems like a big effort, even though I used to do it 3x/week...
hair type: 2B/3A
low poo: Elucence moisture; Elucence clarifying (after swimming)

summer/fall styling: CJ CCCC lite + CJ Curl Queen

But i've never taken 20 minutes to straighten my hair!! It actually takes me 2 hours to straighten my hair... and it's pretty much a full day thing! And also, when i straighten, i can last a week (or even more) with it really straight and really nice (i wrap my hair at night) which is really good cause i dont have to worry about straightening (since its already straight) or re-wetting in the cold mornings! But CG here i come!
