Default How to clump curls with Deva Conditioner?

Hi,

When I go to the salon, and my stylist washes my hair with the deva one condition, she manages to get my curls to "clump" together. When I use the products at home, my curls are stringy and frizzy. Being the dummy that I am, I didn't think to ask her how she does it, so I was wondering if any of you know how. TIA!

What is she putting on your hair for stylers? It's funny because there have been times when I've had my hair cut that it DOESn't clump and other times it does even though she does the same exact thing. My stylist also uses DEVA, I tried over and over to duplicate the results using everything and it was hit or miss. This time of year I really like MOP-C with the Deva. I apply it after the ArcAngel and have had really good hair days this way.

My Deva stylist puts OneC on the length of my hair and then washes my scalp with LowPoo, finger combs any spots that need it, and rinses it all out together

Next she rakes through BeLeave-In and then makes me flip my head upside down and scrunches some excess water out

Then she scrunches in Angell and keeps scrunching until it gets the clump she likes and then I flip my head back up

Next she clips my roots (oh how I wish I could figure out how to do that right) and it's time to dry

She never uses SetItFree but when I used it at home I sprayed my hair right before I diffused with great results

After it's dry she sets it with a little SetMeUp

I don't know what you're using but hopefully this helps. It certainly made me miss my Deva products. Good Luck!

That's different! I have to say that using enough of the Arc Angel helps a lot. I use quite a bit of it about 4-5 quarters worth on SOAKING wet hair in the shower and this makes me clump, but just the conditioner alone doesn't do that.

In my experience I only got good clumps with Deva when I used the BeLeave In and then about a tablespoon or so of Angell. I HAD to use the leave-in. Gel alone never clumped right. But that is tue for any time I do my hair. I absolutely have to use a leave-in to clump at all.

I think that's actually the method
that's recommended on the LowPoo bottle but I can't remember. I haven't used it in two months. DEL all your Deva talk lately is making me want to take my Deva out of the cabinet...

I rake a large amt. of OneC through my hair in the shower, then flip over and scrunch it through until it feels like seaweed and squishes which gets the clumps going. It sits on my hair through the shower routine. I then rinse upside down in cool water and firmly scrunch in a small amt. of OneC. Get out of the shower, scrunch lightly with a MF towel, spray 2-3 shots of SIF over my hair, smooth over Angell and then scrunch it through. Flip upright, clip and diffuse. This gives me the most clumping of any product line and is how my hair is done at Devachan. You can mix ArcAngell and Angell together. I find ArcAngell gives me more curls and has far more hold but I don't care for the crunchy feel in the wintertime.

B-Leave in ingredients:
Aqueous Extracts of: Achilea Millefolium, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria), Cymbopogon Schoenanthus, Humulus Lupulus (Hops), Melissa Officinalis (Balm Mint), Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary), Glycerin, PEG-8, Propylene Glycol, PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Polyquaternium-10, Sodium Polyacrylate, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Methyldibroma Glutaronitrile, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance.

SORRY!! Not trying to ignite the PJ but this Winter has SUCKED EGGS (as Sunshine would say) one bad experiment after another. I'm just so relieved to find my Deva working for me again!! I can't do the B-leave in cuz of the Wheat Protein Low Poo didn't do much for me, I never liked it. In the CG Book it's recommended for wavies to coat with condish first when using POO so that would make sense now that I think of it to use the LOW poo in that manner.

I've got to remember to leave a little One in my hair as a LI. I don't like to combine a lot of diff products when using Deva, they don't seem to "play" well with a lot of other stuff it's the one line I tend to use exclusively with the exception of adding a smidge of Mop-C for extra hold.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I went and looked in the mirror and she had clumps with just the OneC, and then she finished with Angell. I don't have any of the other products except the Low Poo. She used the Low Poo, and I only use it about once a week. Do you think that makes a difference?

Hope it works for you. Please post

It's the one line which I always seem to go back too. I think I've been through them all but Deva stays in the cupboard. I don't mix it with other lines. I used the above method during a vacation to Mexico and with all the humidity finally had the hair I've dreamed of. Long clumpy spirals, volume and shine....never been able to totally duplicate it in the Midwest I'm going on a cruise this spring and am only taking Deva products. I know the look I consistently get with them. Struttswife has an excellent thread on using their products which is helpful. I'll try to locate it and post the link.

I wouldn't use the LowPoo more than once per week. The OneC works well as a daily washing conditioner. I have found the Devacare NoPoo works the best for me when I cleanse. The smell is too strong on the regular NoPoo and gives me a headache. I also can't use SIF unless it's mixed in wet hair. Initially, I never used it and had really bad luck with it until they showed me how to scruch it into wet hair before Angell. It gives me frizz and dullness on dry hair. So don't be concerned if you don't have it. B'Leave In works great if I only use it occasionally. Rake and scrunch it into wet hair. Do NOT use the OneC as a leave-in if you are using B'Leave In. The occasional use will give me outstanding clumping but if I use it 2-3 times in a row my hair hates it. Carlos, formally at Devachan, also hated B'Leave In. It's probably the least loved of the product line.

This link is authored by a Deva trained stylist. I can't locate the link where she specifically described how to apply the Deva products but this is very, very close.

Thanks DEL. I have been having protein sensitivities as I mentioned yesterday and it's good to know. I never really liked the texture of BeLeave-In anyway. I've been using my GVP Conditioning balm as a leave-in and it's worked great so can't wait to try OneC as one. Icequeen I'll definitely let you know how it goes. I always had good luck with Deva but got tired of having to order it as no one in my city carries it and my stylist is 1/2 an hour away. I did find a great website with cheaper prices than the salon and usually free shipping on orders over a certain amount (right now it's $39.95) so for those that order it www.brightonbeautysupply.com . I have ordered from them twice and never had a problem. Can't wait to try the products in a dif way.

Arrow Strutts Wife's Instructions on using DEVA

Deva Product Notes from the Hair Show

No Poo
If your hair is particularly dry, take a small amount of No Poo prior to wetting your hair and massage it firmly into your hair length from mid-shaft to ends. Then, wet your hair as usual. The force of the water will push the product into your hair shaft, providing a more moisturizing cleanse.

When cleansing, always use a firm, circular motion to massage the product into your scalp and then scrunch the product into your hair length to begin encouraging your curl. When rinsing, massage your scalp gently to help remove the product.

One Condition
When applying the conditioner, massage and rake it firmly into your hair, running your fingers down your hair length until you are sure your hair is well-coated, then scrunch the product firmly into your hair length to continue to encourage your curl. Let it sit for a few moments to let your hair absorb what it needs, then rinse with cool water.

Angell or Arc Angell
You don't have to use half the bottle, but be sure you are being generous with your product application. Gel "the size of a dime or quarter" simply will not cut it for a curly girl, no matter what product you are using. The goal is to make sure all your curls are nicely coated with product at the end of the application. When your curls are well-contained within a coating of gel, the product will "crystallize" into a protective shell around the curl as it dries, keeping the formed curl in place with a minimum of frizz. When you scrunch the product to break it up after your hair is completely dry, the curl will be smoothly released from its crystallized shell and become a soft, well-formed lock without frizz.

Set It Free
Set It Free can be used to break up your dried curls after they are dry, but it is also a very useful product in keeping frizz down while diffusing your hair. If you are using a diffuser and notice a small veil of frizz starting to lift, gently mist the affected area with a very small spritz (remember, this is concentrated stuff, so be judicious). The Set It Free will calm any frizz that is starting to form during the diffusing process. Also, if you want to use Set It Free as a finishing tool, mist a few pumps into your hand and glaze it over your hair before scrunching instead of spraying it directly onto your curls - your newly dried hair will remain much drier than way.

Set Me Up!
This is the new pomade from DevaConcepts that can be used to "finish" your look (I love the stuff personally and have started using it instead of Set It Free to finish my own hair). Once your hair is dry, bend over and let your curls fall free. Take a pea-sized amount of Set Me Up! and rub it between your palms. Place your hands, curled into soft claws, onto your scalp from the underside and "scrub" your scalp gently all over to loosen the dried curls from your scalp. Then scrunch your curls in a firm, upward motion to break up the crystallized product before turning right-side up. You can also use a dab of Set Me Up! between your thumb and index finger to smooth individual curls for a more "piecey" look.

Heaven in Hair
This is the new deep moisture treatment from DevaConcepts, which I finally had the opportunity to use when I returned from the hair show. Hands down, the best deep treatment I've ever had in my life. I used it 24 hours after I colored my hair and cut my usual "after color curl freak-out" from five days down to two.

I did it this way and really like how it turned out. I did have to use a lot of OneC to rake through because I was pretty tangled but it was actually easier to finger comb upside down. My hair took double the time to diffuse but I figured it would since I usually plop. My hair is defined and I barely had to SOTC. I'll def use more Angell next time as I have a little frizz but after the touch up thread I'm trying really hard not to fix it. I will def do this again!!! And here are the results

It looks great and you have clumps! I usually find my hair looks even better as the day goes on and I can get 2nd day hair with the routine.

You guys inspired me...I'm typing this as my Heaven In Hair is working and then off to do my hair with Deva products today
