highlights volumize the roots?

I have medium brown hair with blonde foil highlights. I notice when my roots grow out they are flat, but after highlighting them they have more volume. Is this an 'illusion' making it seem they have more volume since they are no longer dark against the blonde or does somehow the color/bleach thicken the hair shaft?

My BFF has super baby fine hair. She highlights her hair for volume every 3 months. You can really see the difference.

I have fine hair and foil highlights. I find that product and technique help with root volume. If I don't do the right styling--my roots are flat.

ETA: A great haircut also helps with everything, LOL!

I also get foiled colorant-based highlights, but only about twice a year. I get my roots colored every six weeks and like kathymack said, product and technique most definitely help with volume. If you diffuse, make sure you concentrate on your roots and not just the ends. I also get at least micro trims every 6 weeks; I find it necessary with the color and highlighting to help keep my hair healthy.

msg and I could be a "tag team" on this one! I get my haircut every six weeks--and am careful to diffuse the roots, upside down. While my hair has always grown quickly, my stylist and I can't believe how much it's grown this winter with the natural products. I get HAIRCUTS every six weeks--not micro trims!

LOL! A definite tag team! I am also careful to start out diffusing the roots upside down. I've gotten a couple of HAIRCUTS (like my last one), but when I'm trying to let it grow (AGAIN), I still get little trims every 6 weeks. Even a little bit taken off seems to help tremendously and doesn't affect the growth.
